Columbus, Ohio — On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Columbus Police Officers shot and critically injured a 16-year-old murder suspect after a high-stakes foot pursuit in an apartment complex. The 16-year-old suspect, later identified as Ricardo Ramirez, accused of fatally shooting 39-year-old Alejandro Lopez-Lechuga earlier that day, fled a traffic stop on Cooper Colony Drive armed with a rifle. Body camera and dashcam footage show Ramirez exiting a vehicle and running while holding the firearm.
Officers fired several shots, striking Ramirez, who collapsed between two buildings. Ramirez was a passenger, and an unidentified female drove the car, police said. Authorities later recovered the rifle, believed to have been used in the earlier homicide. Ramirez remains hospitalized and faces murder charges. The incident follows an intense 16-hour surveillance operation involving SWAT and undercover units. Police say Ramirez shot Lopez-Lechuga after being confronted for attempting to break into a vehicle in a northeast Columbus apartment complex.
