Seattle police officer Daniel Auderer has been taken off patrol duty and reassigned to a non-operational position after a bodycam recording revealed him laughing and making remarks about the death of Jaahnavi Kandula, a 23-year-old student from India who was struck and killed by a police SUV on January 23. In a phone call with police union President Mike Solan, Auderer can be heard discussing the crash, stating the speed of the vehicle, and commenting on the value of Kandula’s life. The comments have prompted an investigation by Seattle’s Office of Police Accountability.

The Seattle Police Officers Guild has stated that the recorded conversation was taken out of context, claiming that the officers were mimicking how the city’s lawyers might attempt to minimize liability for the incident. Community leaders and advisory council members have expressed their concerns over the incident, emphasizing the impact such behavior can have on the relationship between the Seattle Police Department and the community. The incident has raised questions about the department’s culture and the ongoing efforts to improve race relations.

  1. MEH! Watch the video – the girl is running through the intersection – so it is clear she saw the police car coming and willfully attempted to run through the intersection. She is 100% responsible for her actions!

  2. Remember before they had bodycam or any video? Pre-Rodney King. The cops did and said whatever they wanted no questions asked. Now they still say and do whatever they want, but sometimes questions are asked.

  3. I support our men and women in blue, but why are there so many officers have no empathy, lack deescalation skills, quick to anger and lack common sense? Is it poor recruiting? Inadequate training? Incompetent supervision? Inept senior leadership? Or lack of accountability and oversight from political leaders?

  4. He is not the only one who feels this way just take another officer with a similar personality I often wonder what it is with people like this I run into I would have never thought that would go this far as to not car about another life but I have a particular person in mind that acts like him just judging off this video I hope I’m wrong really this is one Time I hope I’m wrong

  5. Totally understand the "ordinary person"/"limited value" statement. Was it funny? No.
    Was it unrealistic? No
Would it be harsh for the parents to hear? Yes
Does it fit in a context of organizational response to a problem? Yes, though sarcastically couches
    Horrible joke. Accurate statement.

  6. I wonder if anything of substance ever happened? Like lose of police certificate for life? Very callous viewpoint of the people that should be protecting. Oh that’s right they only protect property.

  7. Where are all the typical people you find under this police channel comments section? Y'all hibernating? 0:23 low value, reminds me of podcasts like fresh and fit. You're a low value woman 👩😂😂, y'all think he tunes in? And that why he said it🙊

  8. I respect police officers, and see their value in society. I’m not a vigilante. Don’t see myself dressed in a costume, patrolling the streets. Something happens and I call 911 like the next guy, and hunker down until I see flashing lights and hear sirens. I also pray that someone like this isn’t who shows up in a uniform. Who exactly is he going to protect and serve?

He’s embarrassed himself, and brought shame upon every good conscientious cop in his department. This is why sensitivity training is necessary. Here’s a guy who clearly demonstrates why it’s needed.
