The parents of a 14-year-old boy who was shot and killed by a Los Angeles Police Department officer held a news conference Tuesday where they released body cam footage of the deadly encounter. Jesse Romero’s parents joined attorneys and activists at the news conference, where partial body cam footage from Romero’s fatal 2016 shooting by an LAPD officer was shown for the first time. The family’s attorney Humberto Guizar says the graphic footage disproves the city’s claim that Romero shot at officers first, and shows that he was unarmed when shot by police responding to a vandalism call. The body cam footage shown by Guizar showed the perspective of the “shooting” officer and the “following” officer while chasing Romero. An investigation by the Justice System Integrity Division of the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office found that LAPD Officer Eden Medina used “reasonable force in self-defense and defense of others” during the Aug. 9, 2016, shooting.

The Feb. 28, 2018, report states that Medina was forced to “make a split second decision” prior to shooting Romero. The LAPD released a statement Tuesday afternoon in response to the partial release of the body cam video. The statement reads in part: “The Los Angeles Police Department understands that any time that an officer uses deadly force that ends in a fatality it is a painful tragedy for the family and friends of the suspect, the community and the officers involved. This is why the LAPD, its oversight bodies, and the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office scrutinizes these incidents as closely as possible to ensure that the use of deadly force was appropriate to defend the life of the officer or members of the public.” Guizar urged “scared” witnesses to come forward and tell the “truth” about what they saw that day.

  1. His parents did a great job! What the heck is wrong with people?!?’ How do his parents think his behavior and actions weren’t the reason why he is dead? I have made it clear to my children to respect not just the police, but their elders and people in authority! So sad this boy wasn’t taught the same.

  2. He died for spray painting a wall and for shooting the floor while theres people robbing stores and other more crimes smh

  3. No racism here , both hispanic bith chasing a stupid kid with a magnum who shot first and you can see the gun on the ground. So anger is wasted energy.

  4. Am glad the fucking kid is dead cause he could have killed the police officer's left a kid with out a dad or mom that stupid kid made his fucking choice when he pulled the trigger am not going to feel sorry for him and his family cause if he dare to shoot at the police he could have easily shot another teen last time I checked the police dont just bother you for no random reason anyone who has a gun and is willing to shoot it at innocent people deserves to get shot back or killed I know it's not a popular opinion but that's my two cent on the subject

  5. In the description "The family's attorney Humberto Guizar says the graphic footage disproves the city's claim that Romero shot at officers first, and shows that he was unarmed when shot by police."

What a horrible attorney. Seriously. One play though the video and it is undeniably evident that both of the lawyer's claims are false. 1:06 you hear the boy firing his weapon at the LEO as he round the corner, and 1:37 you can see where his firearm fell after he was shot. That's why I can't stand lawyers; they are more concerned with "winning" than telling the truth.

  6. I'm glad the officers involved were deemed justifiable in their actions regarding this case. The boy did shoot at officers first, and so they responded the way they would with any armed suspect. Of course the family and community tried to pin the officers' actions as racist and unnecessary, but they were neither. The officers acted justly and did what they had to do to protect themselves and others. No officer ever wants to shoot and kill a suspect, especially when they're under age, but sometimes it happens. Just another case that could've been avoided, had the boy not been in possession of a gun and had respect for the law and those that implement it.

  7. Parents have a son who robbed and shot at cops. They should LOOK IN THE MIRROR!!!
Suing for a justified death is plain WRONG!!

  8. When watching these I always think of those people saying, "why didn’t they take him alive" and shit like that. I mean why not? Why not give them hot meals and a bed to sleep on on the taxpayers dime so they can get out in a certain amount of time and possibly do the same thing again.q I saw people like that in juvenile at 16. I was one of three white kids there, the rest were black and Mexican, and the other kids were usually back in after a month of getting out for doing the same shit they got in for. I kept clean and now I’m 23 and still going good. Stupid decisions lead to stuff like this. Don’t blame the cops for dealing with dumbasses appropriately

  9. I'm glad I'm not a police officer, nothing would piss me off more than having to run. 🏃‍♂️🤣

  10. I’ve actually never had a problem with the cops…maybe it’s because I’ve never fired a gun at a cop, or maybe I just have privilege, who knows? Oh yeah…every college freshman with markers and a poster board knows.

  11. Ok here it goes the shot was heard at least 2 to 3ft before cop reaches corner kid is lieing on the floor never see the kid toss any gun so that means gun was tossed before cop turns the corner so the cop cant say kid pointed a gun at him most likely gun went off when kid tossed it over the fence unjustly shot by these trigger happy hollenbeck lapd.thugs with a badge dirty lieing fucks everyone knows there trigger happy pieces of shit.

  12. I don't know who is more diluted, the dead guy, the activists, or the parents. Running from the police with a gun in your hand will get you shot; if the officers do their job. What's there to cry about?

  13. That lead cop was fast as fuck! The second guy was struggling to keep up. Someone sign the lead guy to the NFL, that 40 time is off the charts.

  14. LITERALLY EVERY COMMENT I READ ON ALL THESE POLICE SHOOTING VIDEOS ARE NASTY AF AND RACIST. STRAIGHT UP DISCUSTING. I STAND FOR THE POLICE TOO USUALLY BUT JESUS!

  15. The parents obviously care more about their fuckup kid after he died than before he died. Otherwise he would have been less likely to be in this situation to begin with.
