Decatur, IL — Decatur Police Department — On June 18, 2021, at around 10:45 p.m. in the 300 block of East Leafland Avenue Decatur Police Department officer was completing paperwork in the parking of a church when a suspect later identified as Marcus Boykin, 29 drove up to the squad car and as they neared the driver’s side, he stuck his arm out of the window and fired one time at the officer.
(The act of Boykin firing the weapon is not captured on video due to the direction of the dash camera.)
Thankfully, the officer was not hit by the gunfire and was uninjured during the incident.
The Decatur Police Officer discharged his duty weapon through his windshield at Boykin in defense of his life in the several minutes pursuit before Boykin was arrested.
The Macon County State’s Attorney has ruled the force used by the officer in discharging their handgun was justified.
Marcus Boykin was arrested by DPD for numerous criminal offenses including Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, Aggravated Assault of a Police Officer, Possession of a Weapon by a Felon and Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding Police and Aggravated DUI.
The video first shows when Boykin approached the parked officer and fired his weapon towards the officer. The act of Boykin firing the weapon is not captured on video due to the direction of the dash camera, but Boykin can be seen approaching the officer while leaning out of the driver’s window as he neared the officer.
The video next shows dash camera footage and body-worn camera footage, both from the same officer, to show the officer discharging their weapon. The dash camera footage shows Boykin turn around inside of the vehicle and point the handgun directly towards the officer. The footage also shows Boykin continuing to display and move the gun around inside of the vehicle as he drives off.

Can someone from the Decatur Police Department or surrounding agencies explain why the HELL would you have an officer at the 2:24 attempt to deploy a spike strip at the vehicle of a ARMED SUSPECT WHO JUST SHOT AT COPS??
