Gladstone, Oregon — On November 22, 2021, just before 8 p.m., Gladstone Police Officer Clement Lau pulled over now 37-year-old Yvette Lares Garcia after she did not stop at a stop sign. During the stop, Officer Lau learned Garcia had an extraditable warrant from Texas and took her into custody. After Gladstone Sgt. Travis Hill arrived to the scene, Garcia told officers she was concerned about her two pit bulls alone at her home. Officers agreed to stop at her home on the way to jail to secure her dogs for Clackamas County Dog Control. The officers arrived at the home with Garcia. She was in handcuffs at the time. They enter the home through the garage and the dogs rushed out. The dogs barked at the officers, one growling. Garcia recommends getting leashes for her pets. With her hands behind her back and in handcuffs, Garcia walked upstairs to get a leash. Garcia drew Sgt. Hill’s attention away from her for a moment and was able to grab a 9mm semi-automatic handgun from a nearby nightstand.

Garcia said she would not go back to jail and then shot Sgt. Hill in the lower leg. The two officers then exchanged gunfire with Garcia, yelling at her multiple times to drop the gun. Moments later, backup arrives, and Officer Lau rushed in to help his partner. Garcia was hit in the torso multiples times and taken to the hospital for treatment. Officer Lau was not injured, but Sgt. Hill was shot in the leg and grazed on the arm. Hill’s leg wound caused permanent injury and he left law enforcement. On. October 12, 2022, Clackamas County Circuit Judge Cody M. Weston sentenced Garcia to 10 years in prison, the maximum sentence allowed for attempted aggravated murder under Oregon law. She is also required to pay Hill a $50,000 compensatory fine for injuries that caused permanent injury. Texas officials intent to extradite Garcia for allegedly embezzling $1.4 million from an oil company where she worked in Ector County.

  1. Horrible officer safety. You don’t let a suspect walk through their home on their own. You go and find the items they want on your own or it’s a no go. Non negotiable.

Also, carry a fucking tourniquet. It’ll save your life.

  2. You can train with videos, you can train with practical application. But if you can’t understand that complacency kills, then accept an early death.

  3. HOW did she get off so lightly on ruining that officer's career and permanently physically altering his mobility and life?! Come on Texas! Y'all are supposed to be scarier than that!

  4. First things first….Is this protocol to let a detainee have that much slack? I'm all for cops doing civil service for civilians…but someone who's wanted for a high crime of 1.4Ms embezzlement w a warrant for arrest in another state is not one for such leniency….They got jezebelled…Probably the same tactics she used to get away with her initial criminal activity….Bottomline, I hope the officers keep the same selflessness they had but direct it to those who deserve it..and the ones who deserve it most of the times aren't the pretty and petite damzels in distress…Those are the most dangerous of all

  5. I wonder if they got in trouble for bringing her to her home and not directly to jail? I think it was great they tried to help but it ended up with on cop having to leave his career and another with PTSD.

  6. Unfortunate for Travis, and I'm happy he's alive, but letting her rummage around for stuff was a rookie mistake, also what happened to the dogs? Lau shot at at least one of them thinking she was coming into that doorway…I hope they're fine and in better homes now.

  7. As someone who has family in law enforcement, this is NOT what you do. You have to be with your detainee at all times. Not doing so nearly cost them their life. Also, she didn’t care enough about her dogs at all to take it this far because her dogs will now be dead by the time she’s out. She’s also lucky that she did this in Oregon because if you do this in the south, that’s it. She’d probably get almost life especially on a police officer. It’s like that in Louisiana.

  8. Its crazy how she only got sentenced to 10 years the system of laws we have is broken she needs more like 50 years at least for something like that

  9. And this is exactly why we are so Stern and seem so rude when dealing with suspects you can't show Humanity to people anymore because they turn around and try to kill you.

  10. I would love to know what he was doing for 120 seconds alone with her upstairs without his body camera on, to be perfectly honest.

  11. Are the dogs ok? I know the cops lived but what about the dogs? That slag got lucky as hell and to only get 10 years my god that's lenient.

  12. I cannot believe they put themselves in this position. Take her to jail, let animal control deal with the dogs. Luckily they were not attacked by the dogs or some punk hiding in the house to ambush them. Terrible decision. Too bad she won't hang for any of her crimes…

  13. "Judge Cody M. Weston sentenced Garcia to 10 years in prison, the maximum sentence allowed for attempted aggravated murder under Oregon law. She is also required to pay Hill a $50,000 compensatory fine for injuries that caused permanent injury." 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

  14. This is why you don't trust Criminals. But 10yrs is way to low. Should be more like 25yrs. And her having to pay 50K should be more like 500k. Since the officer will have a much harder time finding a job.

  15. Why is attempted murder not the same sentence as murder?

If I robbed a bank and they later caught me and retrieved the money, I wouldn’t be charged with attempted robbery.
