Pinellas County, Florida — On March 12, 2023, Corporal Aitken and K9 Taco were tracking a vehicle burglary suspect in the area of 6385 60th Avenue North in St. Petersburg, accompanied by Sergeant Viano. After jumping a fence and tracking into the back yard of a residence, the suspect, 23-year-old Zion Bostick ambushed Corporal Aitken and shot him 3 times. He then fired at Sergeant Viano multiple times. K9 Taco immediately apprehended Bostick, allowing Sergeant Viano to return fire. Bostick was struck multiple times by Sergeant Viano and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Corporal Aitken spent some time in the hospital, but has since been released. During a press conference April 6, Aitken also credited Taco’s training to his survival.

Despite his youth, Bostick had already served two stints in state prison, and had most recently been released back onto the streets exactly one year prior to the shootingHis prior offenses include drug charges, grand theft, and gun violations, among others. Bostick skipped out of a court hearing on pending attempted burglary and driving with a suspended license charges on March 7, just days before the ambush. He was expected to enter into a plea agreement that day, but he never showed up. “He told his mom he would not go back to prison.â€
The first officer on scene was shot in the neck, hand, and leg. Glad he survived!

Taco didn’t back down one bit after seeing his handler get ambushed. He had to get his pound of flesh though. Glad to see that only the POS is no longer with us.

I can see why the second officer us sargeant. He could've ran and hid in safety, but he walked face to face with that gunman and took him down while the dog held him.
Damn it cover officers, you're our designated shooters. You've got to keep up and provide lethal cover, we've got our hands full with the dog, we can't be working the dog and shooting at the same time. Thank God Deputy Aitken will survive, and Taco didn't get shot in the gunfight.
Taco saved the day! Thank God that corporal survived. The blurring of his body made me think he didn't make it at first.
