Thomas “Tahaka” Gaither was out on parole when then-Gov. Glendening of Maryland revoked parole for all persons convicted of a life sentence. Since the late 1990s, Gaither has remained incarcerated—despite once having been deemed fit for release. His story is not unusual for those who’ve experienced Maryland’s parole system. Since 2015, barely half of 523 parole-eligible prisoners serving life sentences have had their cases reviewed, and just 76 have been released. A new study from the Justice Policy Institute, Safe at Home: Improving Maryland’s Parole Release Decision-Making, identifies the problems with the system and attempts to map solutions. Tara Gaither, daughter of Thomas Gaither, and Shekhinah Braveheart of the Justice Policy Institute join Rattling the Bars to discuss Maryland’s parole system.

Wow!!!
Outstanding presentation of data and recommendations by Braveheart. Outstanding explanation of the parole process and the extremely prejudicial outcomes denying these men and women their freedom. So appreciative of the young lady maintaining a relationship with her father. She is so correct: over incarceration prevents the parental relationship and increases rates of imprisonment. It’s horrifying for children to lose their fathers in this way! We all do the time with our incarcerated relatives.

I really love this show on the network. I always learn so much. Thank you for all you do.
Well done the Governor.
A lot of the rules and regulations are unconstitutional against a persons natural rights. Thanks for reporting on this. Good job!
He raped two women. When will our lives and our well being mean ANYTHING to the world?
I have sympathy for him and I have sympathy for the victims, you can do both at the same time, but violence against women simply for the sake of violence against women is reprehensible and grotesque. People need to see those that commit violence against women are marginalized and ostracized, kept away from society.
It’s a slap in every woman’s face for a life sentence for rape to not mean life.
The families of the perpetrators suffer too and that is so sad and I am so sorry he made the choices he did and his life took the path that it did and I hope he knows peace but dude REALLY needs to earn that parole
The prisons get funds for the incarcerated so the more inmates that hold on to the more money! Sick corrupt racist plantation system!
I would not be surprised if this channel deletes this comment. Please report the FULL STORY. The only hit I got for Thomas Gaither in Maryland is a case from 1971 where he raped 2 women.
"The first case tried involved a charge of rape upon Mrs. Emily Ann Kirmil, a 52 year old housewife on August 19, 1970, at her home in Baltimore County. The second case involved a charge of rape upon Mrs. Loretta Rosendale, a 58 year old church attendant on July 16, 1970, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Catonsville." as per Law Justia
If this is the same man, then yes he deserves a life sentence. Rape is a crime that will affect the life of the victims until their death. Rapists, murderers and pedophiles don't deserve parole. His daughter is now as old as the victims he raped. He should have never got parole.
I don’t know what you did but if you killed or raped someone it’s my opinion that you should serve all of your time
33:45 "Human capital." Such a capitalist term. Just say "human lives." We do NOT need to downgrade people from being people with lives and loved ones…to being capital, and therefore having a MONETARY value that, if we just exceed that, their humanity can be ignored! Because that's how human life is treated under capitalism, even when regulated heavily. Just exceed the monetary value and you can do whatever you want, including poison millions with toxic substances from industry.
Release him so he can become a Grandfather
i dont have much sympathy for the difficulty in getting paroled for violent crimes. These people are talking about parole like its a right and everyone should get it instead of it being merit based.
Once the government puts it's hand on you, you're a slave for life!
How does a prisoner get parole? First get on your knees, then bend over for the parole board while giving up any self respect then rinse & repeat time and time again. If they believe in anyway that you are not a broken man then do it all again.
Thank you Mansa Musa for your candor and interviews that bring light and humanity to those who are so often suppressed from sight. Prayers RNN coverage will bring about the needed attention for Mr Gaither and fellows suffering this injustice. Bless you
Id rather work next to an American convict than an illegal convict with no recorded criminal history.
He's been served his time. Prayerfully he'll be released soon.
