In Turkey’s Akbelen Forest, villagers and environmental activists are fighting to protect centuries-old trees from a massive coal mine. The forest is not only their home—it also provides many with their livelihoods. The Erdogan government has denounced the protests as marginal and anti-development, sending security forces to back up Limak Holding, the major Turkish coal conglomerate behind the project. The Real News reports from Akbelen Forest.

  1. Ahh great NATO member Turkey doing its bit for the environment. I believe Germany still clearfells forests for industrial use too. Amazing how the climate crisis once again gets ignored in favour of big business and in this case coal of all things.

  2. Either, you get to source the problem, the political traitors ..or fight against the police..
Fighting the police is going to be an unfair fight, if you are not protected or have guns…

  3. At least it's a comfort to know there are good souls in this world. We rarely have power, and we often lose, but we have decency and kindness, and a clear conscience– which they do not.

  4. Is the coal mining company required to restore the land after extraction is complete? If so, it's only a transitory blemish on the land.

  5. They shut down the production of natural gas and oil claiming its what's affecting the climate then they cut down the trees to do mining producing lithium and coal to heat and produce and store electricity. What is wrong with this picture greed greed greed greed these Global oligarchs want to kill us all

  6. Cops are cops no matter what country you’re in. Mindless soldiers of the State purposed to bring violence to citizens.
