What happened to Americans’ economic rights? w/Mark Paul | The Marc Steiner Show – Everything Law and Order Blog

Inequality lies at the heart of contemporary American politics—from the dizzying power of corporations and the billionaire class to the racialized and gendered dimensions of wealth and income disparities. Yet the question of economic justice, as well as the struggle to attain it, also has long historical roots. Mark Paul joins The Marc Steiner Show to discuss his new book, The Ends of Freedom: Reclaiming America’s Lost Promise of Economic Rights, an historical treatment of historical pursuits of economic equality in America spanning centuries.

Mark Paul is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy Rutgers University. He is a political economist working in the areas of inequality and environmental policy.

  1. We remain prisoners of Backward Think as long as we refuse to acknowledge ALL DCs Insider Traders actively wage War On ThePeople, complete with MilitarizedPolice and the highest prison population of all developed nations, in order to lockup 2/3 -3/4 of the nation in their Political +Economic Apartheid State. NOTHING gives them that Right, ESPECIALLY not the Insider Trading, Wage & TaxTheft Wealth they get ripping off of Workers & Working Class Cities.

  2. This guy has way too much respect for the progressives in Washington that have been spitting in the faces of everyday Americans. With that said I do respect his views and depth of knowledge. I’m going to have to add this book to the list

  3. "There is a long racist history in this country." Sure, but did any women directly benefit from the Homestead Act, etc. There's also a long sexist history in this country; women do not even have equal rights yet.
And frankly, trying to equalize the past in the present is only going to cause major problems. So I agree that we need to leave the past behind us, and enact general policies that lift all poor and working people up.
    Great conversation!

  4. When are these interviews going to address the fact that Democrats commitment to the ultra wealthy at the expense of everyone else is just the other side of the same corrupt coin as Republicans. Democrats say they want to help the working class but actually protect the donor class, as Biden said, "nothing will fundamentally change." The disillusionment of the working class from this betrayal is what fuels the creeping fascism of Republicans. The Dems love when Republicans win because they know the GOP will reduce taxes for the wealthy, deregulate, attack workers rights and protect Big Business. That helps Democrats donors while allowing them to blame Republicans for what their own wealthy donors want. Wash, rinse and repeat.

The system works but for whom?

  5. America is bought and paid for by corporations and the donor/elite class and it doesn't matter which party you vote for. They knee-capped Bernie and "the squad" is under the thumb of corporate democrats. Hey AOC!! WTF is "the RUCKUS" you promised to bring???? your country is screwed and is taking the G7 countries down with it and it's no wonder why the rest of the world is turning to China for help.

  6. what happened to what what? They were erased by the state, which has been serving capitalism since the beginning.
I mean, which century does the mainstream media live in ??!!

  7. In a non-Socially Democratic s.ystem such as Capitalism, it's not your health wellbeing that gains the attention. It's quite the opposite. It's your sickness that gains the medical institution's attention. Corporations and Government are conj.oined to maximize profit. NOT to maximize health.

Our health problems are directly proportio.nal to, how Capitalism and Social Democracy are antithet.ical and incompatible with eachother. We live in an anti-social e.nvironment and the battle for the survival of our species is failing because of it.

  8. usa is not a democracy.
only in a democracy, do ordinary people have rights. that's because ordinary people rule in a democracy, and rights come from power.
if you submit to rule by any elite group, you do not have rights. you may have privileges, extended by your masters at their convenience, for as long as suits them.
when the elite want more of the cake, they squeeze you. that's what happened to your 'rights.'
if you are too ignorant, too fearful, or too lazy, to demand democracy, then learn to enjoy being a slave.

  9. 32:12 until common “services“ are taken from parasites, nothing will change. It is the average US American that gets everything done, not parasites. Our species is capable of creating well-being for every woman and man on this planet. We can do it using less. There’s a lot of work to get there, but, less work once finished.

  10. There is a man called Peter Joseph. The Zeitgeist movement. he spoke of a work for what you need. Those aren’t the exact words. What is he talking about? He is talking about capitalism. We do not live in capitalism. Why? Rich people are happy to steal your capital through unfair currency exchange. Why not, you give them permission. it is all about the language. The letters CAP in capitalism, refer to your head. find another word with those letters in them that mean anything other than head, or top.

Why don’t we have human rights? There is a book called “the new human rights movement“, because the first human rights movement was a smashing success. Nobody cares about human rights. Why? The condition of man has been altered. You are no longer men and women, you are human.

Ethnically white and Black people are indigenous to the Americas. Or, turtle island. And island with no people on it is in habited. Once people arrive, the island is habited.

  11. 6:39 we live in feudalism. We do not live in capitalism. As it was 100 years ago, 1000 years ago, 5000 years ago, a very few have all the currency.

  12. US Americans have more freedom than you can imagine. when you add the letters DOM at the end of free, you change the condition of being free. with freedom, you are free to be dominated. It is better to be free.

  13. Literally no economist who isn't an idiot would claim hard work leads to success. Valuable work leads to success.

You can work very hard adding little value or very light adding a lot of value.

  14. This guy doesn't think before he speaks! He said at 11:37 to 11:57 in, that Medicare is a high quality Healthcare program and then he said that Medicare is a low quality program for the poor! What is Medicare? High quality or Low quality?
