The Wizards and Capitals gentrified Chinatown. Now they might ditch it | Edge of Sports – Everything Law and Order Blog

In the 1990s, the construction of a new sports arena in Chinatown brought the Washington Bullets (now the Washington Wizards) to the heart of DC. The cost of this move was felt deeply in Chinatown, as several blocks of residences and small businesses were flattened to make way for the multimillion dollar project. Decades later, the Wizards are now considering an exit from DC for Virginia. As has been noted on the show before, these massive sports teams moves primarily benefit owners and their cronies in industry, who stand to benefit from vacuuming massive quantities of taxpayer money into their own pockets. Edge of Sports breaks down how the flight of sports teams from DC could once again come at Chinatown’s expense.

  1. Why shouldn’t billionaires expect local government to kiss ass? They pay for the privilege.

  2. Seize private property because some emotional guy thinks that in the future businesses will not want to be in this neighborhood because the teams are gone? DC has nothing else to offer? What are some other reasons why businesses might not want to stick around? Why not seize their private property or force them to stay? Pathetic.

  3. Cubs (in part) gentrified Boys Town in Chicago; last time I was there I cried real tears. It’s Disney Rainbow capitalism; the very people who built that neighborhood’s character and iconic vibe are now alienated from it.
But they put up posters and murals showing what it once was so that’s cool. 🤦‍♀️ Chicago’s Chinatown is still once of the purest places as these things go, but I see the gentrification encroaching on its borders. The horizon stealing foamcore condo creep is visible from all sides. .. can these people ever be stopped?
