Nayib Bukele’s El Salvador: Gang crackdown or return to dictatorship? – Everything Law and Order Blog

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele is a millennial social media sensation, who has ruled with an iron fist over the last year, instituting a state of exception and locking up 65,000 suspected gang members. For much of the country, his policies have been an overwhelming success, slashing crime rates like never seen. But, thousands of family members of the detained say their loved ones are innocent. On May 1, they led a huge International Workers Day march against the government. Their stories, and the signs they carry, are eerily reminiscent. In the 1970s and 80s, thirty thousand innocent civilians were detained, disappeared and murdered during El Salvador’s armed internal conflict and under brutal US-backed authoritarian regimes. Today, many fear the return of dictatorship.

  1. There is no dictorship in El Salvador. Our president has put order and exercise the current laws. The family members of the gang members now in prison are the ones who are unhappy about the situation. This is what we needed.

  2. Outside countries such as the US doesn’t want El Salvador to flourish. The US is the reason why many countries are down bad

  3. Damn, imagine getting arrested and not having access tona fair trial…..2% of the population is behind bars 😞…..its good toncrack down on violence but at least give rhem a fair trial….this can go many ways…

  4. I am sure some of them may be lock up my mistakes. But why do they always show photos of criminals when they were in elementary school? I am sure the government is doing their job to proof their innocence. El Salvador is a lot safer than the USA now.

  5. UNITED NATION, IMF, "WEST COUNTRY" , HUMAN RIGHT ORGANIZATION SECRETLY WANTING SMALL COUNTRIES OR EVEN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES TO REMAIN IN CONFLICT AND POVERTY SO THAT THEY CAN EASILY CONTROL AND OBSERVE THEIR NEW WORLD ORDER AGENDA!!!

  6. This people make no sense .. I bet when the gangs members where beheading innocent people no body was protesting and asking for human rights in the street and against the president … if you son was hanging out with wrong people even if he was not part of the gang he still part of it cuz he hanging out with criminals if the police don’t get you the criminals will .

  7. Fact:

"EVERY FAMILY will say their son/daughter is INNOCENT, even they KNOW (or don't know) that he/she is CRIMINAL."

ONLY 1% is doing that rally, ad the 99% LOVE BUKELE, period.

  8. Nayib Bukele is what the USA want Joe Biden to be. Instead, Joe is a stupid idiot.

Much love to El Salvador from the Philippines.

  9. Bukele a dictatorship??????? No. Bukele is a Savior,,,, God Bless Bukele. Viva Bukele,,,, Presidente para Nuestra Union Americana.

  10. You can go. On the street of El Salvador. And ask random people. How safe we feel
And not. We're not under a regime or a dictator. Very, very safe towns, cities, and the whole country
