Under the new leadership team led by General President Sean M. O’Brien, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters are re-introducing themselves to the bosses and to the world as a fighting union, and they are gearing up for their biggest test yet: the impending negotiations of the IBT’s contract with United Parcel Service (UPS). With UPS employing over 350,000 Teamster members around the country, theirs is the largest collective bargaining agreement in North America—and the current contract is set to expire on July 31. With national negotiations set to begin this month, Teamsters leaders are traveling to union locals around the country, mobilizing their members, and preparing UPS workers for a strike if a new contract is not reached on time. We attended an April 2 rally at Teamsters Local 25 in Boston (O’Brien’s old local) and spoke with folks on the ground about this new era for the Teamsters and what’s at stake in the UPS contract fight.

  1. Jane works part time.. 4-5 hours, receives healthcare. If you don’t like the pay, situation or condition..leave? This isn’t a difficult concept. You want full time/living wage but you’re part time? Then leave for a full time job. What is the argument here? Why wait for a union to tell you have your life will go, that is insane.

  2. Ive always said UPS is the backbone of this union,it may not have been like this always but its certainly that today !!!
    Im a retired teamster of 27 yrs,and my son works for UPS and he's ready to carry the torch !!!
    I never worked for UPS but the season of 2021 i worked as a seasonal jumper and loved it,i did a golf cart run on my own then jumped for a driver the rest of the day until the last package come off the truck,this is hard work !!! this is not an easy job,these UPS workers deserve all they get !!!

  3. I would have to say that UPS will hold out almost to the end. They are testing the new leadership that is now in control of the international teamsters and comparing to what they had for years with the HOFFA REGIME. UPS for years have made out big time with the HOFFA REGIME Now he has retired and the teamsters had to vote a new slate into office. Unfortunately during the HOFFA years thousands of members lost a great deal and the company prospered from it with more then 16 years in time and not one dollar more was given in raises into the pensions for all the members. Not until the last two contracts under the HOFFA RAGIME did they finally give its members and increase to their pensions but it came with an attachment that increase would go into paying a percentage of moneys into their health care. HOFFA and the COMPANY cut a big deal behind closed doors that year UPS handed over complete control of all health care benefits over to the INTERNATIONAL UNION and for the first time the union told its members that they had to pay a percentage of moneys into their health care benefits. So for more then 16 years the members after paying that percentage of health care they walked away with a hundred dollar increase in their pension. UPS got a sweet deal they did not have to deal with that major headache anymore they wiped their hands clean of that issue.The UNION under HOFFA also got a sweet deal and that was taking full control of the members health care. The HOFFA ADMINISTRATION never informed its members that the company was handing over complete control of health care to the UNIONS not until it was a done deal every member found out after the fact it was never addressed to the members for a vote so the HOFFA RAGIME rode those coat tails to another victory and took full credit and preached to the members on how great of a deal that they got for the members. HOFFA has retired and the members had to vote a new RAGIME into office and you have the O’BRIAN ADMINISTRATION TO ALL YOU UNOIN MEMBERS do not let your new leaders end up like the HOFFA ADMINISTRATION hold them accountable keep them in check remain vigilant they are talking tough OK good but’t don’t fold once you start you have to go all the way remain in solidarity!!! The big strike of 1997 lasted two weeks and the company lost a great deal and swore that they would never forget and so just remember that you members can be your own worst enemy’s after the first week on the picket lines fellow members went to the media to be interviewed and complained that the UNION made them strike against their wishes they did not want any part of striking so just food for thought if you go you go all the way. I truly do believe that UPS is holding off to the last minute as to test this new administration I believe that the company will not repeat the mistake they made back in 1997. Remember talk is cheap if this new administration the O’BRIAN ADMINISTRATION backs their rhetoric with ACTIONS and do what they say with out equivocation then you are good to go so good LUCK to all you teamsters stay tough and I hope that you all get what you deserve!!!!   6. The retirees that retired this year and last year and so forth go on the on the picket line disabled workers 4 UPS on picket line is their pensions and so forth then they're messing with I don't care because a million billion dollar company UPS decent contract

  8. Their leader has sold them out nany times already. The union is for the union. Not the workers . The people that broke the strike lines before got rewarded,not punished, like the union said they would. No punishment, no real strike fund. Got 60$ a week last strike. Union collected money in the name of a strike fund, only for it to be more money for the politicians they obey.

  10. Pretty much everyday I have a supervisor tell me I am ass loading trailers for ups. Plus I do my best, and still get yelled at.

  11. I’m a teamster Local 705 Chicago proud card carrying member and a TDU member, and a DePaul University Labor Leadership program graduate. I understand UPS is the bread and butter of the Teamsters. I am not a UPSer, and I wish the Teamsters would show other divisions of the Teamsters this much fight when contracts come up. I’m tired of hearing “look at what we got for UPS” as if any of that money trickles down to other divisions of labor. I’m also tired of hearing “well you’re not UPS so you can’t have as much as they do”. I love my Teamster brothers and sisters of UPS but there’s more then just UPS in the Teamsters. Fight for the rest of us just as much and as hard as you do for UPS. Solidarity, stop the war on workers. Local 705 Mfer.

  12. – UPS makes more profit, claims that they're on the forefront of logistics and technology, yet refuses to create permanent full time positions for inside hub operations.
    – When we went on strike in '97, noone expected to be 22.3, an air driver, or a janitor (porter). We were in our 20s, worked like machines, and expected top rate pay for fulltime sorter and loader work. Its 2023. Time for young 20 something employees who hustle those long hours and work hard, to become permanent full time inside hourly employees.
    – The superhub in hodgkins il. Uped their starting rate to 22h and 24$ an hour for night and sunrise employees.
    It was an unequal m.r.a. exclusive to hodgekins, and those with less seniority.
    Like the 22.4 was totally redundant. When all they had to do, to fill part time positions, was to create new full time ones.
    Our next agreement needs to include:
    Permanent.
    – full time loader
    – full time sorter
    Positions, in every hub around the nation.

  16. These massive corporations are making billions/trillions of dollars while the workers work their fingers to the bone! The workers deserve more money because inflation (gas, utilities, rents…) is going sky high!! UPS workers damn near kill themselves while the managers are rude, threatening, and disrespectful!

  17. This is great and all especially for part timers but the one thing I have not heard anything about yet is wage increases to match inflation.. RR got damn near 20% increase in pay due to inflation. This needs to be on top of the list not just the “part time” campaign. Those of us full timers do not want to be going backwards. We were paid generously for our hard work but inflation has ruined that. We need a increase that’ll match inflation period for everyone part time and full.
