Professor Nira Wickramasinghe explains the role of colonialism in the country’s past century of history in the first of a special TRNN two-part series on Sri Lanka.

Dr. Nira Wickramasinghe is a professor of Modern South Asian Studies at Leiden University. She is the author of several books, including Sri Lanka in the Modern Age. A History, and Ethnic politics in colonial Sri Lanka, 1927–1947.

  1. Her census stats are incorrect. From the 2012 census, SL Tamils are 11.2% of the population, and over 70% of them live in the north-east.

  3. I appreciate the effort here but this interview was disappointing in that it was poorly structured in my opinion. I was hoping you'd lay more of a historical foundation and then move into today. 99% of the world knows nothing about Sri Lanka so some remedial work is required.

  4. Very glad I made an hour to watch this. Really interesting stuff. Unfortunately a lot of predictable stuff that you see in the histories of so many countries, like the brutal suppression of the left.
