Baltimore’s Enoch Pratt Free Library workers move to unionize – Everything Law and Order Blog

Employees of Baltimore’s Enoch Pratt Free Library system have announced their intention to unionize, citing better pay, benefits for all, and greater employee input into working conditions as their chief motivations. Seeking voluntary recognition from Pratt leadership, Pratt Workers United hopes to join AFSCME Council 67, where workers from Walters Art Museum and Baltimore Museum of Art are also seeking representation. TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez interviews Pratt Workers United organizers Marti Dirscheri and Antoinette Wilson on the unionization campaign.

  1. I am a retired union Ironworker, nothing but positive things to say about MY union experience. Interesting point about if it didnt already exist ….. you can bet that the first question asked would be " how much money would it generate" IMHO

  2. The Library of Congress is unionized, also part of the AFSCME guild. Enoch Pratt needs to follow suit.

  3. The Enoch Pratt library system is the largest library system in Maryland. It needs to support its employees the best way possible, it is an essential part of life in Baltimore.

  4. Unions could negotiate for 40% stock ownership in the capitalist enterprise and be part of the decision-making process on safety, wages and benefits. Workers and stockholders share the responsibility for profits and losses.

  6. And the terrorist games continue throughout a this United Snakes of AmeriKKK :

All I’m hearing is BS here , it’s all about anti Black racism at the very top and sprinkled downward to its very bottom at the same time , if you can read between these lines . But I also digress as those being interviewed here are trying their best to as well , because the truth is filtering through them loud and clearly wether they know it or not .

In other words WS and anti Blackness is still the major target for extermination in America , and it’s being purposely perpetuated by any and all means necessary throughout the total 9 interactions in all of WS’s societies(economic , education , entertainment , labor , law , politics , sex , religion and war) .

Thank God they still cannot fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time , but still they’ll never be able to keep fooling all of the people all of the time which is still their goal .

The simplest problems in a majority Black neighborhood you’ll never find in a Dwight one , unless they’re collateral damage and targeted for extermination likewise .

Need they or we say more ? B1 . Amin and Shalom .

  7. I just recently signed up with the Pratt library at the Pigtown branch. Fantastic people. I'm surprised an organization so old wasn't unionized a century ago, but its definitely due now, any large business like the library system should be unionized.

  8. the bottom line is, the powers that be, don't want us educated. they want us as dumbed down as possible so we don't have ideas or our own thoughts. if they had their way, they would burn down all the libraries and destroy all books. a well informed public is a danger to the current, past and future administrations

  9. welcome to the workforce in the United States. 50% of Americans don't have benefits. not to mention, hard work does not get you recognized in the workforce. being an ass kisser does. the more you kiss your supervisors asses, the better chance you have to advance. hardworking, educated, moral individuals are not appreciated. ass kissing, bootlicking, tattletales get the recognition. its a sad state of affairs but that's the reality of it

  10. Proud of you, too. Union strong. Can I tell you about when I wasn’t? Because I bartended at a time when creepers were about & I had good people stand up. These regulars saved my ass. & it should have been them. But they weren’t getting paid:m. They were just the good ones. Be the good ones. & support unions.

  11. I was an organizer for the Pipeliners Union local 798( Jurisdiction in all 50 states) Unions are a great thing to be apart of. All my kids was born cuz of the Union. UNIONS HAVE NO PLACE WHATSOEVER WITHIN LAW ENFORCEMENT. It totally defeats the whole entire systems setting. How in the hell can a cop earn more than a TEACHER. I’m talking kindergarten thru 12 grade? Being a cop is so easy and actually most cops are not anywhere near the top 50% of there own class. Most cops are actually pretty dumb.

  12. "never worked at a place that had no advancement…"

I did for 8-1/2 years in the 1980s, an engineering firm in Camden, NJ that was responsible for designing the "guts" of the AWACS radar dish systems, a UNIQUE form of electronics that was highly-specialized. I'll always remember the day my boss in the drafting department told me the owners would NEVER give me a raise, no matter how good my work was (and we had gotten a letter of commendation from the Navy Department saying we had supplied them with "the best-looking drawing package they had ever received"). He advised me to QUIT, go somewhere else for awhile, and then, later, come back for more money. Even then, I thought that was INSANE!!! It's over 35 years later, and I still do.

They also refused to PROMOTE their senior engineers when one of the owners DIED from over-work, instead, hiring a new chief engineer straight out of college purely on the basis of his DEGREE. Naturally, given the nature of the work, the guy had NO idea what he was doing, and over the next 2 years, their 4 top engineers all QUIT in disgust.

I continue to say, this was and remains an example of just HOW INCOMPETENT the "owner class" in this country really is. They only care for money and power and profits, and NOTHING else.

  13. yea that's it make the library pay you more, they are on the way out so just give them a push, move from that shit hole start taking care of your body, why should anyone care about you when you don't care about your self

  14. Can all in left-YT please start educating people about both: (1) the difference between right-authoritarian vs. right-libertarian; & (2) the difference between left-authoritarian vs left-libertarian? It’s long overdue. People aren’t cattle or sheep: They will understand if we educate them.
Though we need to educate (& learn) about all the nuance.

  15. During occupy wall street we had striking nurses as well as librarians keeping us informed as well as healthy.
