The US military is poisoning the water in O’ahu – Everything Law and Order Blog

As Director for the Sierra Club of Hawai’i Wayne Tanaka recently wrote in The Guardian, the US Navy’s Red Hill Fuel Storage Facility is “a massive underground ‘farm’ of 18-million liter fuel tanks and pipes just 100 feet above metropolitan O’ahu. Its construction began before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Since then, it has leaked over 180,000 gallons of petroleum into the groundwater aquifer that provides drinking water for over 400,000 residents and visitors from Hālawa to Hawaiʻi Kai.”

Regardless of the major threat the facility poses to the local water system and demands from Native Hawaiians and supporters to address the crisis and hold the US military accountable, it wasn’t until hundreds of military families living near Pearl Harbor reported symptoms of petroleum poisoning that Red Hill’s operations were paused in late November. But the root causes of the environmental and public health crisis remain untouched and the fight to shut down Red Hill is still very much ongoing. In this segment of The Marc Steiner Show, Marc speaks about that fight with Mikey Inouye, an independent filmmaker born and raised in Hawai‘i, community organizer, and member of O‘ahu Water Protectors. The O‘ahu Water Protectors is an organization that formed out of a coalition of Kānaka Maoli organizers, Sierra Club members and supporters, Hawai‘i Peace and Justice, and other groups working toward sovereignty, decolonization, and demilitarization.

  1. If there is money or government involvement the public is going to suffer. Until this becomes mainstream they're going to continue to get away with it.

  2. Obama will never imagine to how a low level his image as a president fell when he came to Flint with a a glass of water from there, stating that he could drink it.

  3. Did he say "…dark propaganda…..consecrate the obsene. ?" No poet coukd say it more true. I saw that at the tourist attractions in Charkeston, sc. Pousoning water. Jesus help us

  4. actually there is massive amounts of pollution on military bases throughout the U.S. mainland but there is no media coverage because our media is owned by oil companies and the military industrial complex

  5. The only way our government will be held accountable is when the people stand up against the tyranny. The US government is the most corrupt and dishonest government on earth by far. These are the ultra rich and most powerful people in the world.

  6. But how should the government clean up the military mess? The military only gets 800,000 billion dollars a year. That is hardly enough to fill their pockets.

  7. 'Hope is a discipline.'
Wow… That's brilliant and so true. Those who lose hope seem to turn quite inevitably self centered (lack of any altruism), cynical, Machiavellian, and essentially evil.

    This channel is very impressive.

  8. I hope they get their water issue figured out. But as for the fight for land had the US not taken over Hawaii way back when, Hawaii would be speaking Japanese right now. Most of the natives would of more then likely been murdered and would no longer exist.

  9. Yup, the military claimed flushing all contaminated fuel tainted water straight into the Halawa Valley steams that drained into the ocean! Image that, military families bathed and acoustic their skins. Do you think flushed piping systems are free of the fuel? Did the military flush the public residents homes? EPA and Local Health Depart had not launch fines. C&C included. Help! Help! HELP US! Our precious aquafer!

  10. *You know the Military in Hawaii ONLY PAYS $1 Rent for use of the land they use to poison per yr**Those Multi-Asian American cultures & other Locals running gov't that are taking on white privilege allowed this & knew it, but did Nothing for years due kickbacks and pay offs from contractors*Where is that story*Oh, I mentioned that The REAL story is those that sold out their own ppl for Profit***

  11. Military are treating Hawaii like a brown country & the Asians Locals(that run gov't as conservative dems aka corp dems) are freaking out that they are being treated like Porta Rico/Guam/& US Somoa I knew it was coming but the locals taking on white privilege too busy having privilege &not listening to blk activist like Carol Cox(that's who should talk to-he's been mentioning it for YRS-these are care lately types) grinning at military to do what they should have done Years Ago**Now PPL like me are saying I told them so**
