Can democracy exist in the digital era? – Everything Law and Order Blog

From viral police brutality videos shot by citizen journalists to whisper networks and remote organizing during the pandemic, digital technologies have empowered people around the world to advance their struggles for justice, accountability, democracy, and dignity. At the same time, from unrelenting lobbying efforts to sophisticated systems of surveillance and censorship, from Facebook going to battle with the Australian government to gig companies rewriting labor law in California, Big Tech continues to assert its power to set the limits of democracy for the rest of us. So, what does “democracy” even mean in the digital era? Who decides what that meaning is? And what does the struggle for democracy look like in our technology-filled world?

In the second of our three-part livestream series “The Long Sili-CON: Power & Censorship in the Digital Era,” co-produced by TRNN and Project Censored, we explore the ways our digital reality has shaped our ability to live and act democratically. We will host this livestream on Wednesday, May 5, from 8-9:30 pm EDT on The Real News Network YouTube channel, which will include a panel discussion and a live Q&A session with panelists and audience members. Our panel will include:

Maximillian Alvarez (discussion moderator) – Editor-in-Chief, The Real News Network
Veena Dubal — Professor of Law, University of California, Hastings
Meredith Whittaker — Minderoo Research Professor, New York University; co-founder of AI Now Institute
Robin Andersen — Professor of Communication and Media Studies, Fordham University
Mickey Huff (Q&A moderator) – Director, Project Censored; President, Media Freedom Foundation

  1. These women rewrote the question "Can democracy exist" into "Capitalism doesn't do democracy". Very articulate women indeed grappling with our basic global reality.

  2. Consider this…If 65% of eligible people worldwide do not vote (research the facts), then 65% do not believe in Government. So how is democracy even legitimate? Why do I need to put up with psychotic people who believe we need slavemasters who are merely ridiculously wealthy ashholes taking advantage of us all (Theft, extortion, murder, separation, idolatry, fake law, fake schooling etc… while you the idiot voter who are by no means the majority, who allowed it? Dogs are more self aware of the masters lies than you are, yet you continue to throw pearls before swine?

  3. I'd say no. Because we never had it in the first place. To see real Democracy. The fake two party corporate system with corporate police judicial prison MIC system has to fall for change.

  4. We are not live in a Democracy.. we are being used, manuplated, we have been cencerored demonatized, we have had everything collected, all calls, all texts, everything we say in our homes, where we are, what we buy. Who we talk to. All put in the folder, workers exploration, workers being monitored, being reported on by social media that they were at so and so.. local law enforcement being told everything that we say, where we are.. who our families are. Hour many children we have what we eat. What we watch on TV.. they are collecting everything.. everything when we go the bathroom. So if you think we are free . Nada.

  5. Even this channel is deleting unfavorable comments … Pathetic left leaning folks behave just like their counterparts on the right

  6. Digital era or no digital era, democracy is being asphyxiated by the day. I guess the digital space has the capacity to accelerate the process. Meantime. Great to see you 👌🏼👍🇦🇺

  7. Seems like it lends itself more to mob rule than republican democracy.
That, or outright despotism by the big tech oligarchy.
(it's actually been a combination of both recently).
