$600M Property Tax Overcharge Is Eroding Detroit’s Black Homeownership – Everything Law and Order Blog

African-American homeowners in Detroit don’t just face lingering damage from the 2008 recession. The city is suffering from a foreclosure crisis after overcharging homeowners $600 million in property taxes.

CORRECTION: The estimation that Detroit owns 1/3 of all property through the Detroit Land Bank was quoted in error. The more accurate estimate is that the Land Bank represents 1/4 of the total property of the city.

  1. I have found out that I have been being grossly overcharged with regard to my property taxes. I learned that a white homeowner two houses down was paying less than half the amount I pafor his four bedroom, three bath home,of what I've been paying for my two bedroom, one nath

  2. Once a cheater always a cheater! But quick to yell, pull yourself up by the bootstraps, No how about you quit lying about everything in life!

  3. Congresswoman Rasida Talib has started a class action lawsuit on the three predominately black cities in Wayne county Detroit, Inkster and highland park

  4. $600 million dollars estimate, in reality, is probably more like $1 billion or more. This is beyond scandalous. But as usual, no "authorities" will be held accountable for any criminal actions. And as usual, the people just bend over and take another pounding.

  5. Excellent interview/discussion, and I wish the Black Detroiters success with recovering from this economic nightmare they've been going through.

  6. @The Real News Network : Jaqueline, there's something VERY ODD about some of what you say at the beginning of this piece. Beginning around 0:20 you conclude mention of the 2008 financial recession and then seem to wish to compare home equity losses between Black and white Americans, as if Blacks lost more, but you say Blacks lost roughly 12% and then state the same for whites. So, they both lost roughly 12%. However, you next go on to say that the Blacks lost half or over half of their wealth, but don't say how much whites lost, or to what extent in terms of both numbers of these home owners, as well as to what degree their wealth was lost. I imagine some lost but don't have any statistical info. about it.

  7. Nefarious my white a$$ !! The thieves of that state have just plundered EVERYTHING!! Cannot see why the good folks of Detroit did not start a lynch mob after the first tax bill after 08.
