Two sides of the same coin and that coin is bought by the Insurance Companies. Do not vote for either party. They are both corrupt.
This is an open letter to the Governor of California who was touting Single Payer and not meaning it.
In California, we have a new governor who is banding around the term Single Payer, but actually is pushing the ACA, Affordable Care Act, the gift to the Health Insurance Companies. I hope that Governor Gavin Newsom continues with full Single Payer and removes the need for health insurance companies all together. Health insurance does nothing for health care except to be a gate keeper to keep the uninsured away from health care and fix health costs too high for anyone to afford. The Affordable Care Act has been a double gift to the insurance companies. 1) it has guaranteed profits to them and they have ignored preexisting conditions (for now). 2) when the ACA fails, those people who have gotten service under the ACA will now be marked as preexisting conditions and placed into high risk pools by the Health Insurance companies. Most of these people will then be priced out of health care support.
As for affording single payer, we are valuating health care with the healh insurance company's figures, the inflated costs that they have monetized health care with so that you cannot get health care unless you are part of their club. But even if you pay the premiums, they still reserve the right to deny you health care. Get the health insurance companies out of the picture and ;
1) THE COST OF HEALTH CARE COMES DOWN,
2) WE GET A HEALTHY WORK FORCE,
3) IT BECOMES A SHOT IN THE ARM FOR THE LARGE AND SMALL BUSINESSES THAT GIVE UP SO MUCH OF THEIR PROFITS TO THE INSURANCE COMPANIES. See http://www.fixithealthcare.org .
4) DAY WORKERS, CONSULTANTS, PART-TIME WORKERS, FULL-TIME WORKERS AND THEIR FAMILIES WILL GET HEALTH CARE,

8) THE ACA MAKES HEALTH CARE AVAILABLE, BUT CAN STILL DENY SERVICE AND BE OUT OF RANGE FOR PEOPLE TO AFFORD. MOSERATI'S ARE AVAILABLE BUT THEY ARE NOT AFFORDABLE.
9) MOST COUNTRIES SPEND LESS THAN HALF WHAT WE DO FOR HEALTH CARE AND THEY HAVE BETTER OUTCOMES THAN WE DO. OUR OUTCOMES ARE JUST ABOVE UGANDA'S OUTCOMES.
10) CALIFORNIA IS THE 6TH LAGEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD AND WHY CAN'T WE TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN PEOPLE.
11) HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE KILLING 45,000 PEOPLE PER YEAR JUST BY DENYING SERVICE AND OUT PRICING HEALTH CARE FOR THE PEOPLE.
This falls outside the realm of the Goldman Sachs School of Medicine, "Treat only symptoms and Effect no cures". As to the cost of health care, other countries don't spend half as much as we do and their outcomes are far better than our medical outcomes. We cannot afford not to have Single Payer.
The question that Paul asked "I dont understand why the insurance companies don't have self interest in bringing down cost" is key. In a competitive market, the insurance company would guard against overpricing in an attempt to undercut competitors.
The same can be said about every other type of insurance, too. Insurance is just another form of taxation, even SSI.

Of course it's better for them. Private insurers steal money and employers use it to control workers.
Good luck single payer is the best probably… But even that system can be overtaken and used by bad actors take it with a grain of salt from a Canadian
