Charlotte, North Carolina — On Sunday, August 20, 2023, shortly before 8 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers responded to an Assist Medic call for service. When officers arrived on scene, they heard sounds of a disturbance inside an apartment, followed by gunshots. Officers forced entry into the apartment and were met by the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Peter Corey. Corey was combative and armed with a firearm. Officers observed the firearm in Corey’s hand and gave repeated commands for him to drop the firearm. The weapon fell out of Corey’s hand and officers moved to separate the subject from the weapon on the ground.
An altercation ensued during which Corey stabbed Officer Shawn McMichael in the head/neck area with a knife. Officer McMichael suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. During the encounter, Officer Tyler Bourque perceived a deadly threat and discharged his service weapon striking Corey. MEDIC responded to render emergency aid to Corey and Officer McMichael. Corey was pronounced deceased on scene. The female victim who suffered a gunshot wound prior to officers arriving on scene was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Multiple firearms and knives were recovered from inside the apartment.

This happened a couple of blocks away from me. I drove by a couple hours afterwards and was wondering why the cops were swarming there.
Side note, NC has some pretty restrictive bodycam footage laws. Technically it's all state property, and requires a court judgement for it to be released. I am generally pro-law enforcement but I think body cams are a huge asset for the public as well as law enforcement. All that is to say I think too difficult to get bodycam footage released in NC. This instance is one rare case where it was released in a somewhat timely manner. CMPD did a pretty good job of putting it all together, too. They have about 30 different videos of this one incident on their YouTube channel.

I'm glad these body cams are coming out, people finally are seeing how crazy being a Police Officer can be. Everyone thinks they can do it..but they can't.

Looking at the comments yah..were to begin. The 911 operator was so quick to dump the call to fire, the fumbling of the keys was just nerve racking plus the failed door attempts. But i gotta know, if the man is psychotic and crazy..why the hell does he hsve a collection of knives and guns. Do u think maybe his roomate, gf, whatever might have tried to prevent that..or family ???

holy shit… that just shows how a medical teams job can go from 0 to 100 in no time. They showed up on a "usual domestic call" and within minutes they go from hearing arguing to being called into a room after chaos and gunshots jusy happened, to have to treat 2 gunshot wounds and a stab to the neck.
