Even though the cost of educating prisoners is less than housing prisoners and reduces recidivism, the federal government cut the Pell grant which helped to fund educational programs in prison. Recidivism is the goal for corporations that continue to fund prison labor. However, volunteers continue to create programs that work, but which need funding to continue. For example, Liberation Literacy in Oregon, which involves family members of prisoners in their program, and Friend of a Friend, which helps prisoners to resolve conflicts effectively and build community

Years ago, I worked in a prison in which inmates could earn an associates degree in business through a private school. The program was funded by Pell Grants. It was a scam because inmates that couldn't read at a 4th grade level had 4.0 GPAs. I'm 100% for educational programs in prisons, but if there's federal money involved, there should be oversight and accountability.

Back in the 70s we had education release. Prisoners could go to college on college campus. There was correspondence schools. There was voc tech being taught.
… it’s a dam shame that our government shutdown programs for prisoners.. I believe that the prisoners are far better off with education, jobs and money than to keep them locked up… but the system of racism white supremacy benefits from mass incarceration of Black bodies!
