Mount Shasta, California — On December 25, 2023, at approximately midnight, Mt. Shasta Police Department received a call from Amtrak personnel advising that they had a passenger onboard threatening staff and passengers with brass knuckles, exhibiting aggressive behavior, and potentially under the influence. Amtrak advised they would be stopping the train on the railroad tracks at Lake St. and requested an officer respond to assist in removing the passenger, identified as 32 year old Nicolas Detweiler. Mt. Shasta Police Department responded and met with Amtrak personnel who led Officer Jeremiah Capurro to Detweiler.

An altercation between Officer Capurro and Detweiler led to shots being fired by Officer Capurro, striking Detweiler. The assisting crew member was also inadvertently struck by gunfire. Life saving aid was rendered to both Detweiler and the crew member following the shooting. Detweiler succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene. The crew member was transported to a local hospital where he received treatment for his injuries. Officer Jeremiah Capurro has over 2 years of experience with agency. Officer Capurro sustained a moderate brain concussion, due to blunt force trauma, and facial injuries as a result of the altercation and was treated at a local area hospital.

  1. I’m with the police 95% of the time but this would be an exception! The cop escalated the situation while the surprised man was willing to exit the train. There’s no way to justify that first shot (what would happen to you if you broke up a fistfight by shooting a guy in the back?),much less the six follow-ups!

  2. "Detweiler succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene." That's always the best part of the description.

  3. I feel like a lot of people don’t read the descriptions on videos before posting comments. This channel has very detailed notes.

Just breeze through it, context is king.

  4. This has been totally avoidable if the police there had training consistent with their job… a drunk making an altercation on a train without weapons… lethal force was not necessary at all.

  5. The fact that they dont receive penalties for injuring civilians is nasty.. Ask questions later when they kicked your teeth in already

  6. It's interesting how context changes things, whilst watching the footage I didn't understand the sudden escalation of things and it seemed like the officer was being overly aggressive, it's only after reading the description that it's clear the guy was attacking people with brass knuckles!!

  7. the cop is going to get charged with crimes – can't control an unarmed person, caused way more harm to the conductor than the bad guy, poor commands. Total mess
