Miami Beach, Florida — On August 10, 2024, at around 7:30 p.m., Florida Highway Patrol Troopers spotted a Toyota SUV that was reported stolen near Alton Road and 56th Street. The owner of the Toyota SUV, Glenda Defas, said she was parking her SUV when the suspect, identified as 46-year-old Savalas Cigar, walked up and asked her for money. After she told him she didn’t have any money, Cigar allegedly threatened her with a hammer before stealing her SUV. Defas’ disabled and deaf brother was inside the vehicle but managed to get out before Cigar sped away.

FHP troopers made their first attempt to stop the vehicle with a PIT maneuver at Alton Road and West 42nd Street. Although the SUV temporarily regained control, a second PIT maneuver on the Alton Road ramp leading to the Julia Tuttle Causeway caused the vehicle to overturn and come to a rest on its side.

Cigar was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center with non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into custody. He now faces charges including grand theft auto, attempting to flee police, and driving without a license. His bond was set at $11,000, and he remains at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Defas reported that several personal belongings were inside the SUV, including her credit card, which she said the suspect later used. He is also accused of selling some of her belongings. She said the suspect also sold several of her belongings. Defas had to borrow a phone so she could call 911. Defas’ loved ones have created a GoFundMe account in hopes that the public will help her buy a new vehicle. Her vehicle was not insured with theft protection.

  2. Make sure to check out the Gofundme in the description section. This poor lady from no fault of her own was attacked with a hammer, her credit card stolen and drained and her car destroyed 🙁 Nobody should have that happen to them.

  3. That final pit looked smooth – bit risky with the nearside traffic, but the cop knew its wheels were turned right and that's where they'd go. I know he might be the only PIT officer there, but if not, good use of the same damaged patrol car for the further attempts.
