While Rebuilding this Burn Totaled Ferrari, I coincidentally ran into the previous owner, and he sent me several thousand worth of Original Ferrari Parts belonging to this car… He also told me the complete story of how it caught on fire.

  1. I have a Jaguar XKRS and it runs extremely hot – under the engine its like a sauna so I can imagine this Ferrari is no different and probably hotter – and the fuel tank and pump is in the rear with the engine – I suspect this fire is due to leaking vapor or fuel from the fuel pump assembly – I am looking at the gasket … is there a gasket fitted – what is the torque for fitting that fuel pump assembly, that plastic thing is just scrwed on a few turns– really.

  2. Don't get why people buy these cars and drive them so little. What are they saving it for, the next guy? Makes no sense

  3. The thump was the sound of the cap jumping the threads and coming off as Mr. Tom might not have screwed it correctly.

  4. harnesses are straps or brackets or clips that hold the looms in……. they are wiring LOOMS your talking about, LOOMS. for such an amazing machine…. get the terminology correct guys. tut

  5. My God, how many records and work could've been done in 10 thousand miles that needed 3 full folders of records?!?!? JESUUUSSS!!! There was a time when I liked certain cars like the 308 and actually thought of buying one until I learned just how ridiculously intensive it was justnto maintain the thing,.like needing to take the engine out to do a servicing, yeah thats a no-go for me, that's aggravation and money, not fun😢

  6. "Our car?" When do I get to drive it…?
You should continue the log book. A very large entry to repair the burn damage will take a little time, but it should be worth it.

  7. Maybe the large "O" ring on the pump was pinched or not sealing properly.. And it wasn't an issue until the tank was filled up and then it splashed around and leaked…

  8. I always heard about fires and ferraris, but never knew the cause. It seems weird to have a fuel pump assembly that has a plastic top. I've only seen ones with metal tops on my cars. Is it common with european makes?

  9. From the videos & photos it's my belief that the fuel line coming from the right side tank popped off and poured fuel over the engine.

Had the fuel line been connected the nipple would not have melted till after the fuel line and that would have taken a lot longer.

  10. 2 thoughts on the cause of the fire… modern cars have high pressure fuel systems. They also have "snap" connections on the fuel lines. Is it possible a fuel line was not fully seated, and popped off? That would explain the sudden misfire from loss of fuel pressure, a pop noise, and a bit of fuel ignited by a hot exaust… 2nd theory… you said he collected 25.3 gallons of fuel, and the car says 25.1 is full. Is it possible since he had just filled it, it was overfull by maybe a gallon, and some went into the evaporate system causing fumes. The "pop" could have been the fumes catching fire after being slightly overfull. When a car is overfull..overfill… you usually have fuel vaper you can smell until it is down to the correct level of "full".

  11. I believe the burned pump was a new version. If you look carefully at the underside of it you see some of the similar yellow/orange that the new ones are, and the heat could have easily faded the coloring to make it look lighter than before. Plastics and chemical pigments react differently to heat, and some will do exactly as I'm describing.
Which leaves it to installation error more likely. It also points to that with the comments about the pumps taking years to fail even if they are the old version.
    Nice drivable restoration, well done.

  12. You did an amazing job of restoring this beautiful red car. Tyler Hoover also had a car like this burn from the same issue 3 or 4 years ago. I believe to damage to his car may have been worse. He sold it to a young man. I don't know if the car was ever repaired
