LIVE: Courtroom Judge Attack Trial — NV v. Deobra Redden — Day 2 – Everything Law and Order Blog

Thirty-one-year-old Deobra Redden is accused of attempted murder, battery, extortion by threat, intimidating a public officer, and willful disregard for the safety of others after he attacked District Judge Mary Kay Holthus in January 2024 during a hearing where Holthus was sentencing him for an unrelated attempted battery charge. Redden’s defense attorneys argued that he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, which allegedly caused him to lunge at the judge after he failed to take his medication. Judge Holthus said Redden slammed her head against the wall before he grabbed her head and ripped some of her hair out.

  1. No one knows this man’s history and should not judge without that knowledge. I prey he gets the help he needs to fight his demons. He appeared to be trying and his family clearly love him.

  2. Wow, when the court officer let the judge know which jurors were late he referenced them by number then NAME. I couldn't believe I heard it and replayed it. It's at time marker 29.32
I hope that officer gets reamed and I can't believe the state didn't ask to speak to the judge (approach). Where is the protection of the jurors?

  3. Just an observation–there were no objections peppering the procedures. Was there an agreement ahead of time to not object? Is it because he pled guilty and was changing to a different guilty plea? No objections really surprised me!

  4. I have to give HUGE props to the presiding judge for the Double Negative issue!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I've always thought this presented a problem when it comes to testimony. Are you saying No because what I said wasn’t right or No because you're agreeing with my no?? 🤔 More judges/attorneys need to pay attention to this.🤓

  5. What a waste of tax payer dollars. This guy thought he could sweet talk his way out of jail. When he didn’t get his way, his natural violent nature came out in spades. Now he wants to claim he wasn’t on his meds trying to pull the nice guy act again? Nope. Not buying it. Despicable.

  6. He looks like he's angry & trying to avoid reacting violently again! When she was trying to sentence him that day he jumped her & he thought then his life was over due to those prior charges, now that he did this,he'll most likely see worse punishment & have more reason to feel his life's over,in a way of some time locked away, plans, new job he mentioned & all ,that is.

  7. 1:31:00 "Isn't it true you don't know how many times he hit you?" to which she answered "Yes". That's not the same as "Isn't it true that he didn't hit you?" If you get hit hard enough, you won't remember what comes after it. You shouldn't be rewarded for hitting someone so hard, they don't remember the details of the attack.
