Critics claim they’re little more than ’torture camps’, taking tough love way too far. But for desperate parents, military-style boot camps are often seen as the last chance for their children to avoid the vicious cycle of delinquency and jail.

We spent five months at the Discovery Challenge Academy, which welcomes 125 troubled adolescents every year. The first two weeks are the hardest. Everything is strictly regimented: 10 minutes to eat, 2 minutes to shower, 10 seconds to put on socks. There are 50 beds per dormitory and even going to the bathroom requires permission. Phones, TVs and the internet are all banned, as is seeing family during the first three months.

Who are these young people? How did they get there and what trials and challenges will they have to overcome?

This documentary was produced by PALLAS and directed by Gaelle Schweller. It was first released in 2018.

  1. As a compassionate, caring and kind person, I strongly disapprove sending any child to any of these troubled teen programs. It truly bothers me to see the pain and suffering these innocent children and teens go through. Children and teens are still young and developing. Instead of sending them to troubled teen programs I feel it would be a better option for them to go to counseling services that can help them overcome their difficulties they go through. This would be a much more effective and less cruel option than sending them away to these programs. I am only sharing my opinion, please do not be offended.😊

  2. As a military veteran, I call this bullsh*t. Having someone scream and yell in an already downtrodden teen's face is not how you build them back up. Some of these kids have been abused. The one kid appears to have depression and other psychological issues. And THIS is what his parent decides is a "last ditch" effort? SMH. The PARENTS are the ones who should be held accountable as well if the children are to be subjected as well.

  3. We really need to bring this back!!! But obviously this generation of soft parents and sensitive people in society are so quick to cry and whine to the government to defund them
