Released Body Worn Camera Footage from critical incident regarding the officer involved shooting that took place on August 24, 2019 in the El Cerrito community in the 5800 block of Adelaide Avenue.
A 70-year-old woman called police shortly before 7:50 p.m. on Saturday, August 24 and tells the dispatcher that her nephew Dennis Carolino 52 years old had thrown bricks at her. “He’s out of his mind,†she said.
Body camera video shows Carolino’s aunt telling Officers Mendez and Keyes, assigned to SDPD’s Mid-City Division that her nephew tried to hit her with a brick twice and she’s concerned he is not taking his medication. “As the officers entered the backyard area to determine the location of the man, he quickly emerged from an outbuilding, holding a shovel. The officers gave the man verbal commands to drop the shovel. One of the officers drew his Taser at that point. The man did not cooperate with the officers’ commands and began to rapidly advance on the officers as he swung the shovel. One officer fired the Taser, which did not have any effect on him. The man continued to advance, prompting the other officer to fire his service weapon,†San Diego Police said in a statement.

Carolino was shot multiple times and died of his injuries.

Sorry, but it sound incredibly stupid to tell a person who's been shot to "just relax."
These Dispatcher interactions with the Public, especially with Foreigners are mind numbing to listen to! They distract and confuse the caller, and do nothing to expedite help to the scene. Jeez! And again, I just couldn't zap a guy with a shovel. There are just too many other options for subduing the guy other than shooting him. The guy weighed maybe 90lbs. Rush him, use the Baton, then tase him on the ground.

It's a sad situation because the Aunt was wanting to help him. The officer could have been seriously injured if not dead from a blow to the head. Unfortunately he did what he had to do. It's justified.
She had to have been hysterical. I'm very intimately familiar with that accent and the culture surrounding it. Wouldn't be surprised if she'd made his life a living hell, despite helping him. Dude was clearly out of it and got what he asked for when he charged them with a shovel. Just tragic for all involved.
