In this series, a ‘person of interest’ is given their previously secret Australian intelligence file and recounts the allegations contained within it.

Gary Foley – a prominent figure of the 1970s “Black Power” movement in Australia – spent many years being spied on by the ASIO. Inspired by the American Black Panther party and the struggle against Apartheid in South Africa, Foley and his contemporaries spent many years campaigning for the rights of Aboriginal Australians – organising multiple protests in the country from the early 70s. In this episode, watch how Gary Foley – whilst under the constant surveillance of the ASIO – fought for the rights of the Aboriginal community.

These are highly personal stories taken from ASIO intelligence files from the Cold War and its aftermath, through to the decades of student radicalism and dissent of the 1960’s and 70’s – a time when fear of Communism, outsiders, and perceived threats to the established order fostered a secret network of surveillance on ordinary Australian citizens.

This documentary was produced by Gai Steele and directed by Haydyn Keen. It was first released in 2014.

  2. Because so many are proactive communists. See Senator Jacinta Price`s Mayo expose` which proves it irrefutably. Traitors one and all. The Voice is a scam for unelected cowards to stealthily usurp parliament. Grab land, establish country then secede; the enemy is then within as a sovereign state for communism to infect our nation.

A still born fantasy of staggering ineptitude that only useful idiots could fall for. Voice won`t fly, it is still born. Piss weak you bastards, may the dreamtime treat you badly for your stupid, failed deceit

  3. gary is a true aussie icon- always on the pushie and memorialised by the lin onus painting- gary has been an inspiration through seeing him on telly, hearing him at rallies and social interactions. It's the full punk attitutude, no bullshit and welcoming nature. only 180 people have watched this, it should be part of national history. i came across it because i was looking for the history of the black panther party in australia- there's other docos about asio's surveillance of the cpa- i'm not a maoist or stalinist but the cpa played an important role in the rights we have, particulary in the work place and the black power movement has shaped culture here in aus. garry, chicca , vincent, what does gabba australia have- germain greer and norm galhager. i forgot about archie, kev warrumpy and the oils

  4. From someone who lived through those times, I found this very interesting, although I admit to knowing a fair bit of the facts and non facts. Thanks.
