  1. The cop, Todd Stanley was found guilty of assault in September 2023. He was sentenced to 2 years probation, 60 days of home electronic monitoring, a $500 fine, and Ms. Hancock's medical bills related to the incident. Ms. Hancock, unfortunately, pled no contest to failure to present her ID, in exchange for having a charge of driving on a suspended license dropped. An open container charge was dropped as well. Ms Hancock was pursuing an out of court settlement with the township. Not the perfect outcome, but it is a start.

  2. Think how much money could be saved and goodwill generated if police departments had continuing education courses with role play for situations like this. The cost per cop per year would be in the hundreds while saving in the thousands or millions.

  3. I think the intellectual standards required for police officers need to be elevated. They have to learn how to make informed, rational decisions based on a given set of circumstances and risks. Too often they remain singularly focused on their own goal not on the best outcome for a situation.

  4. That's an excellent point you made at the end there John. That is, do police even care about their actions and the resulting consequences in the community at large? Do they care about optics for the department and negative media attention? Do they even believe that their body cam footage will reach out to the masses like this? In other words, time and time again the police have been shown to be short-sighted in their approach and then try to do damage control after the fact.
