LIVE: Ballerina Murder Trial — FL v. Ashley Benefield — Day 2 – Everything Law and Order Blog

Former ballerina Ashley Benefield is accused of killing her husband, Douglas Benefield, in September 2020. The Florida couple were in the middle of a heated custody battle when Ashley shot Doug. Prosecutors believe Ashley murdered Doug so she could gain full custody of their young daughter, however, Ashley claims she shot Doug in self-defense after months of alleged abuse. The medical examiner does not believe Doug was facing Ashley when she fired off four rounds at him.

  1. I find it really strange that her mom testified that she and Ashley never discussed her shooting Doug. Not just after it happened, but in all the years since? This sounds very odd to me. Maybe Ashley's counsel advised against discussing it with anyone outside her attorney or her shrink, but I just found this to be a really odd family dynamic. (edit, o.k. after listening to Dr. Russell, my hunch was right for why mom/ashley didn't discuss shooting).

  2. So far, It seems like she was very desperate to get away from this guy. If she didn't have another guy in her life she want to run too (which has never been brought out) then why all the desperate measures to get away from him.. Maybe she was getting abused 🤔

  3. Prosecutors have a one track mind when prosecuting a defendant. They are completely incapable of seeing things with an open minded view. Also, everything they do is to benefit themselves to be elected. It's all politics at the expense of peoples lives

  4. When this case hinges on Ashley's defence of domestic abuse, I think it is staggering that the judge refuses to allow any evidence of Doug's abuse, when clearly there is substantial evidence that he abused her! The judges ruling meant that Doug's lawyer was allowed to spew lies on the stand, knowing that the defence were not allowed to enter into evidence the truth, the judge even denied the defences motion that she had perjured herself, when clearly she did, and done so knowingly, when she knew he admitted the abuse in a court hearing.
And just while I'm on the subject of Doug's lawyer, being a lawyer, you would think she would know how to dress appropriately for court, but no, she showed up in a floaty cerise pink number, more suited to a cocktail party, on a yacht in Monaco, complete with clippity-clop heels! Her constant smiling was unnerving, like she didn't realise it was a murder trial, and she seemed quite ecstatic that she could say what she wanted, and the defence would not be allowed to present the truth!

  5. The lawyer does not know how to do hes job even though hes argued hundreds of murder trials yet he has to ask he's paralegal what questions to ask thats ridiculous.
Im so sick of people murdering people then victom blaming so horrible.

  6. Wow glad other folks are questioning why this case was even brought to trial. Based on the evidence thus far, or lack there of, I would vote to acquit. Confused by this prosecutor and this judge. Have never watched a trial with so little substance and so many interruptions.

  7. Here's the thing. Rewatch parts where they zoom in on her face. Normatively, when people cry, tears come out of their tear ducts. Do you see her wiping any tears?
Also look carefully because some may wipe their face to give the illusion they are wiping tears. Look for water residue on her face, kinda like a glossy/ ish makeup look.
Also, for the defense, I would have attempted to reach out to any potential therapists she may have had. If this is the case, they would have had plenty for the defense to use. That being said, imma just say it: I think she's guilty. Also who thought the defendant's mother's responses and demeanor was super weird/ strange when on the stand?

  8. Stephanie is so unprofessional. She acts like she is defending her husband not a client. If she is bratty like this on the stand, she must be a terrible family lawyer. She did herself no favours. She just seems to like the attention and she could of just answered and moved on but because of her unprofessionalism, it's got out of hand and delayed. She is shocking.

  9. An "abuser"that lets his victim hold arms, go on a cruise with friends, reprehend his daughter, that takes her to live with her mom and even start dating. Then she invites the "abuser" to her house to help her move and she kills him. Is she really playing the victim here? nobody bites that.
