It is not a "lawful order" to tell someone not to film a stranger on the street.
A "lawful order" is an order that is backed up by an actual law. "Give me your ID" after being stopped for speeding is a "lawful order." Cops think that anything they order someone to do is a "lawful order."

The activist is a complete idiot for the cause he supports, but he's WELL within his constitutional rights. The cops may have a role in preserving the peace and might not like him (I know I don't), but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a right to say what he's saying.

JULY 23rd IS MY BIRTHDAY
I'm a Utah resident and love Pioneer Day festivities. I likely would not agree with the general politics of this activist group (although I may or may not agree with the particular criticisms of Smithfield Foids). I agree totally that these deputies brought their personal feelings about the politics into their policing which is generally not a good idea. In this case it led to a 1st Amendment violation. Whether they agree with the politics of the activists or it's implications for employment prospects in that town, that is ENTIRELY irrelevant to the right of the activists to engage individuals on the street in peaceful conversation about it.
Any police officer, or public servant, who gets upset about being filmed by a camera needs to filmed by two cameras. That's more of a red flag that you should keep filming.
