NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) — A Newark police officer has been indicted in connection with an incident in January in which two men fleeing police were shot, one fatally.
An Essex County grand jury charged 26-year-old Jovanny Crespo with six counts. including aggravated manslaughter, aggravated On Jan. 28, 35-year-old Andrew Dixon and 46-year-old Gregory Griffin were stopped by an officer in the area of Clinton Avenue and Thomas Street.
When the officer tried to ask Griffin questions he pulled away, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens.
He said the investigation revealed there was a handgun in the car.
A number of police cars gave chase. At three separate locations, Crespo fired shots at the car, Stephens said.
Both men in the car were shot in the head. Griffin died the next day. Dixon survived but was seriously injured.
Prosecutors say Crespo showed a reckless disregard for human life by shooting into a moving vehicle that had heavily tinted windows.

“I take no pleasure in making this announcement,” said Stephens. “But in this case as in every case, we must go where the facts, the law and the evidence take us.”
The officer was taken into custody and will face a detention hearing.
If convicted on all counts, he faces life in prison.
This is the first fatal police involved shooting to result in an indictment in Essex County in recent memory, Stephens said.

interesting that he was charged with aggravated manslaughter and Chauvin was charged with far worse. Not saying either of them were in the right but watch both the footage and tell me this doesn't look so much worse.
That department needs to put gloves on next time they're doing evidence inventory. They all need to do a little more personal control exercises and learn to make educated decisions.
It was just a standard police chase, and the out-of-control cop starts shooting into the car, there was NO immediate threat or weapon drawn at him. When he first shot randomly at the car, the other cop driving should have just pulled over, and refused to drive further. The car fleeing was driving away from them, and not into them. He was jumping in and out of the car, and then it went from being 'policing' to a 'hit squad'.
How many are they wtf ?!! They bring 50 officers for two guys and a car ! They have money in Newark !!

This shit is fucking WILD, dude. Glad they got his ass off of the street. Hope they fired that other cop that got on top of the guy and started punching him in the head, as well. I understand it's easy to get caught up in the moment sometimes, but this is way out of line, regardless of the backstory.

Assumption: There were terrorists and an explosive device in the car who intended to direct the car to the police department. Therefore, the policeman was forced to open fire to kill, as the car with the terrorists did not stop.
