LIVE: Ballerina Murder Trial — FL v. Ashley Benefield — Pretrial Hearing – Everything Law and Order Blog

The former ballerina accused of murdering her husband heads to trial next week. Ashley Benefield is due in court Tuesday for her final pre-trial hearing before a jury decides whether or not she’s guilty of second-degree murder. In September 2020, Ashley ran to a neighbor’s house in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and stated she had just shot her husband. Douglas Benefield had several gunshot wounds to his leg, arm, and chest area. Ashley Benefield claims she shot him in self-defense after months of alleged abuse.

  1. Just curious why so many go into trials thinking defendant is guilty?

    Not guilty till proven otherwise, no matter what. Make the state earn there keep, the public will hopefully stop going into cases on the fence or even leaning guilty. That’s why the state is always so confident, they know people associate arrest with guilt. If state had to fight as hard as defense then maybe they’d stop trying to bully into plea deals.

  2. For anyone that doesn’t know: Ashley’s stand your ground motion was denied. Her new strategy is battered wife syndrome and self defense even though her lawyer keeps asserting they are using the former.
