In this episode of Crime Watch Daily Updates. A dating app leads to a 40-year-old man’s tragic undoing.
Shawn Arthur, a Kansas City native, worked long hours as a water technician in New Orleans. After his engagement with his then-fiancée ended, he planned to move back to Missouri to be closer to his family. He even had an appointment with a lawyer set for February 25, 2017, to discuss breaking the lease on his New Orleans-area apartment.
But when Shawn didn’t call his dad after the scheduled appointment, his dad got worried. A stranger answered Shawn’s cell phone and said the phone was found at a local cemetery.
His father called the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office to conduct a wellness check on his son. When a deputy arrived, they found Shawn dead on his mattress. Some of his belongings, including his car, wallet, and TV were missing.
An autopsy determined Shawn died from acute pancreatitis and had a blood alcohol level of 0.274 — over three times the legal limit. Investigators called it an accidental death.
What they later found out was that Shawn had recently met a woman named Dominique Berry through a social media app called Meet Me.
After starting their own investigation, Shawn’s family learned that Dominique, a prostitute, and her boyfriend, Randy Schenck, had a scheme where they would target men on dating apps by meeting up with the victims, drugging them, and stealing their belongings. Their crime spree spanned several states across the United States, from California to Tennessee.
In 2019, Berry pleaded guilty to conspiracy and identity theft. Schenck was charged in 2020 with sex trafficking and identity theft, and in May 2022, he pleaded guilty to federal prostitution-related charges and wire fraud.
