Raw Videos in Fatal Chicago Police Shooting of Harith Augustus – Everything Law and Order Blog

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has released raw video footage of the fatal police shooting of Harith Augustus on July 14 in the city’s South Shore neighborhood. Augustus, 37, was approached in the 2000-block of 71st Street by police who suspected he was carrying a firearm. The Chicago Police Department released a portion of one officer’s body camera video of the incident, which ended with an officer shooting and killing Augustus. Augustus’ stepfather was the only member of his family present, along with the attorney, at that viewing. The family’s attorney spoke afterward. “It showed the police officers were there, they saw a young man coming and they start chasing for him for no obvious reason that we’re aware of, and we’ll keep looking into that as the lawyers in the case,” said Standish Willis, attorney.

Willis said they only saw surveillance video from near the scene. It was not immediately clear why they were not shown body cam video. In the days following the shooting, Chicago police released one piece of body cam footage that showed the deadly encounter. But the video had no audio and raised a number of questions. “I think as long as Rahm Emanuel is the mayor of this city we’ll never have true transparency,” said community organizer Will Calloway. “And if the city can selectively release edited video when it wants to within two days, it ought to be doing that for all videos in all instances,” said Matt Topic, Loevy & Loevy. Days of protests followed the shooting. There were clashes between police and protesters and calls for COPA to release all available video.

  1. "Why did he have to pull a gun out on us" maybe Im too sceptical but sometimes I think cops say things like that knowing that it is recorded, for their own defence.

  2. He reached for his gun multiple times while pulling away from the officers. It happens fast so you have to slow the speed to see it, but he does indeed attempt to grab his gun more than once. Had he not created a scene, resisted, fled and attempted to pull his gun out, he would still be alive. It doesn’t matter why the police wanted to talk to him, if he isn’t in the wrong, if he isn’t carrying drugs or guns, if he doesn’t have a warrant he will be able to walk away with a smirk on his face because they had nothing on him, he however made all the wrong decisions and ended up in the morgue as a result. It’s not rocket surgery, just common sense. The family can scream foul all day long but million to one they would react exactly like the officer. Why isn’t the parents more ashamed that they raised a kid that is so defiant and carrying a gun and running from the police as well as tried to pull his gun and shoot at the police. If he had successfully pulled his weapon and killed an officer or innocent bystander how would his parents react? What would his stepdad say then?

  3. At this point the screaming lady is just an edit insert. Like literally there’s a folder somewhere with recordings of a lady screaming or crying and they just edit it in.

  4. if he only had a father that stuck around in his life to show him how to be a man. instead he was raised by the street/gang/hip hop culture. this is the result of many many young black men

  5. I like the dude with the backpack that gets the fuck out of Dodge those are some survival instincts right there unlike most of these dumbasses that stick around filming with their phones waiting to catch a bullet

  6. He did have a gun license, but when there are that many cops, you don't talk your way out. Let them do their thing. As a 23 year veteran, 17 of which as an operator, and a LIFELONG carrier, he did EVERYTHING wrong.

  7. Not justifying the criminals actions, but jesus they look like children who haven't ever seen a cop car, trying to be police. Have they even been trained? Couldn't speak, couldn't believe what had happened, didn't secure the suspect, BARELY secured the weapon then stood around and acted like it was high school. Wtf even is this?

  8. People rioted over this shooting because of the news media not held accountable for the information they distribute to the public.

  9. They should have rioted at the Mayor's office. The crooked politicians are to blame for the sad state of affairs in Chicago. Their policies have lead to that city being a hell hole. Chicago Police have the toughest job in this country. The only people on their side are the law abiding citizens. The politicians just pass the buck onto the police because they know they have no clue on how to run a city and produce an economy where these incidents would rarely occur.

  10. The sad thing is aswell, you can even hear the officer who shot saying “why did he have to pull a gun on us?” Yet people riot because this asshole tries to kill police who don’t even want to hurt you…

  11. He was clearly going for his holster as he ran and turned away. He got shot for a reason. You run from cops and pull a gun you’re bound to get smoked 🥴

  12. The character Ole Otis from the show 'Martin' once said the criminal mind is a stupid mind lol. He did not lie. Pull a gun with all those officers around.

  13. This video describes just how fine the line is between a justified shooting and murder.. At 1:34 the women cop goes back to the officer who fired the shots to let him know that he is in the clear, you can then hear him whisper, 'there was a gun on him?" and she responds yes, you're good.. Him having to ask that question means he wasn't really sure if the guy had a weapon or not.. In his case the guy did but what if he didn't have a weapon and he shot him? Alot of you will say it would still be justified because he resisted and his hands went where they shouldn't have which i completely agree with but here is the thing… This man did not have to die.. Justified or not, the real person to blame for this death is that women cop who for some stupid reason decided to rush him from behind and restrain his movement…Then after the shooting she again screws up by revealing on camera how relieved she is that there was actually a gun on the victim… She is a bag of nerves, sloppy and needs her badge taken from her.. This was not protecting and serving.. Whether he had a gun or not he was minding his own business and there was no real threat until police made one by rushing the dude instead of talking to him like a normal human being.. How hard would it be to approach the man from the front and say hey sir how's it going sorry to ruin your day but we received a complaint and would just like to make sure that you have a permit for the gun you are carrying.. You aren't under arrest but for your own safety would you please rest your hands on your head and keep them there while we gather your info… That way, if you do find a reason to arrest him and he tries to make a run for it, you have already stripped him of his weapon and do not need to gun him down as he tries to get away…. The reason he has a gun in the first place is incase people try to run up on him and there the police are running up on the people who are already paranoid.. Facing someone, letting them know they aren't in trouble and keeping them calm by talking to them like a normal human would prevent half of these cases and lead to more successful arrests.

  14. 00:4600:56 this boy did the 100 metre dash in 9.5 seconds with a backpack on!! That ties Usain Bolt's world record! We need to get this boy a spot in the 2020 olympics, with or without the backpack it don't matter he'll get gold
