In Tucson, Arizona, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department has made public a series of materials, including a 911 call, bodycam footage, and images, shedding light on the events of December 21, 2023. On that night, deputies from the department responded to a residence near Shannon and Overton roads in Casas Adobes following a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute over the custody of a child.

“We have a problem, he tried to take the kid,” a person who later identifies himself as the child’s grandfather says in the 911 call. “He is trying to say he has the paperwork and the mother is not here, I’m the grandfather and we are not going to let him take the kid.”

Upon arrival, deputies encountered Sanchez, aged 29, who did not have court-ordered custody of the child and refused to separate from them, intending to leave with the child against the family’s wishes.

As deputies attempted to apprehend Sanchez, a struggle ensued, leading to a physical altercation. The sequence escalated with the sound of gunfire. Subsequently, an exchange of gunfire between officers and Sanchez occurred, with over a dozen shots heard in the footage. The confrontation resulted in both deputies and Sanchez were shot.

Sanchez managed to flee the scene initially but was later apprehended nearby. All parties involved, including the deputies Jaylon McEuen and Leonardo Wells, and Sanchez, were transported to Banner University Medical Center with severe injuries.

Following treatment, Sanchez was placed under arrest and faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, felony endangerment, and custodial interference. Both deputies have since been discharged from the hospital and are recuperating at home with their families. Wells, it was clarified, was the deputy who discharged his firearm during the encounter, as confirmed by Pima County officials.

  2. That suspect got shot? I didn't see any blood trail or blood on the ground when they found him……..crazy!!! He was s better shot than the 2 deputies smh also, that was a lot of gun shots! I wonder if the deputies shot each other by accident and how many times!? Yikes 😬

  3. It would have been helpful during the arrest if both those young deputies had been A LOT stronger.
It is going to be a long, tough road back to reach Fit For Duty status. They will have to pass the Academy Combatives section again.

  4. Always remember the cops are not your friends, they serve their political masters and will do whatever they are told so they can protect their pensions….

  5. He will now spend A LOT of years trying hard not to drop the soap. Well, looking at how he plucks his eyebrows, maybe he'll be dropping it on purpose every day.

  6. If he hadn't committed the other crimes & really had court paper work, cops would have helped him take his kid. And no gun too🔫.

  7. This is what rushing someone and forcing a father who seems to have a legal right to spend time with his child results in.
I blame the officers for not listening and forcing the outcome.

  8. Bless this poor child who has a father that's a habitual felon and also a mother who is so stupid that she had a child with him. I hope someone else will raise the boy and maybe he'll have a chance.

  9. I don't understand the thought process behind this kind of thinking. Either you go with the police and sort your paperwork out and get your son, or there's a reason you arent allowed to take him, and its not like the cops aren't going to find out. Terrible string of events, thankful both officers are okay, thank you for protecting the community!

  10. I bet both young Deputies learned a valuable lesson on how to control a suspect and body positioning and controlling the hands during a detainment.

  11. Held on to your son one last time while making sure you won't be around until after he's grown. Great decisions.
