Long Beach, California — On August 8, 2021, at approximately 10:43 pm, the Signal Hill Police Department received a call regarding an armed robbery at a grocery store in the 1600 block of East Willow Street. As Signal Hill Police officers arrived on scene, community members began pointing at a vehicle that was driving out of the grocery store parking lot. Officers attempted to contact the driver of the vehicle, a silver 2020 Honda Accord, but the suspect fled from the scene and Signal Hill Police officers initiated a vehicle pursuit. Signal Hill Police officers pursued the suspect vehicle and lost sight of it in the area of Pacific Avenue and Willow Street in Long Beach. The Signal Hill Police Department provided the armed robbery and pursuit information to our Long Beach Police Dispatch who broadcasted that information to officers in the area.

At approximately 10:54 pm, officers who were working as additional resources to combat the recent spike in violent crime that has been occurring in Long Beach, encountered a two-vehicle traffic collision in the area of Harbor Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway. One of the vehicles involved matched the description of the vehicle that Signal Hill Officers were previously pursuing. Officers on scene found the suspect vehicle unoccupied and a community member advised them that the driver ran southbound on Harbor Avenue. He then pointed at a man standing near the corner of Esther Street and Harbor Avenue and identified him as the driver. Officers contacted the suspect and noticed a firearm in the suspect’s front right pant pocket. As officers were attempting to arrest the suspect, an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Officers rendered aid to the suspect until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived on scene. The suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. A loaded firearm was recovered at the scene and no officers were injured. Additionally, detectives later learned that the 2020 Honda Accord had been stolen earlier in the day outside of our jurisdiction. The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Leonides Enriquez of the City of Bellflower. Enriquez is a prohibited possessor and has been booked for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He is currently under medical care at a local hospital while being held on $35,000 bail.

  1. The cops we're straight up giving him 53 different orders and he didn't know which one to follow. Only one cop should be giving orders to the suspect in situations like this.

  3. I'm not defending the guy, but I did tell him to get on his knees. They probably should have added the part where he puts his hands on the back of his head first

  4. i do kinda feel bad for the guy cuz yea his hands went down but they went right to being open and coming back up and homie still got popped

  5. It is a valid argument that he could have gotten confused with two police officers applying different commands (which is not correct by doctrine).
However, on the other hand, he did not obey either of the two commands of putting his hand on the hood or his hands on his knee, and placed his hand close to his waist, which is extremely suspicious.
So I believe the police did wrong, but the suspect missed 2x more.

  6. terrible police work.. fukin appalling.. this dude was not reaching for his pocket.. plus his hands were moving super slow… he was getting 2 different orders and on top of that he was about to get on his knees…. could have killed him due to shit police work

  7. This was a bad shoot, regardless of what this guy did.
Imagine this pussy cop shooting a innocent person because he's such a spaz and mistakes a camera for a gun!!…
    Not acceptable in the slightest.
And if they somehow didn't punish this officer, it's only going to put a wedge even deeper between them and the publics trust.
We don't need trigger happy thugs on the streets with a license to kill and getting paid vacations for it.

  8. Devil's advocate position: cops giving confusing demands, one of them tells him to get on the ground, he starts to, clear footage of him not reaching for the gun and they waste him.

Cop position:. Armed felon tweaking, with a gun in his pocket. Hands go towards his pocket with the gun. Feared for their lives so they shot.

Toss up in front of a jury. May be one where the PD just settles instead of taking their chances in court.

  9. Ooh. Bad shooting. The PD messed up that one. "Get on your knees". The guy moves away apparently to get on his knees. Bang bang.

  10. 95% of the time these dummies don't listen and get what's coming to them but this guy was told to get on his knees and he might have been doing that bad communication by police on this one.
