Maryville, Tennessee — On Thursday, February 8, 2024, Blount County Sheriff Deputy Shelby Eggers, 22, is seen In split-screen body camera footage pulling over and approaching 42-year-old Kenneth DeHart. Deputy Eggers tells DeHart that he had been driving on the wrong side of the road, to which he replies that he was busy tying his hair up and didn’t notice. He said he was driving back home after attending a high school sports game for his son, and later told Deputy Eggers he was in his grandmother’s car after leaving his truck at home. He gives Deputy Eggers a document when she asks for the vehicle’s registration, and she walks back to her cruiser as he searches for documents about the car’s insurance. Back at the cruiser, she calls Deputy Greg McCowan, 43, about the traffic stop. Deputy Eggers got back out of the cruiser, approaching DeHart. Deputy Eggers asks DeHart several times to exit the vehicle, saying she suspected him of smoking marijuana. DeHart refuses to get out of the vehicle and repeatedly denies smoking marijuana.

The second deputy, McCowan, then arrives at the scene and approaches the vehicle from the driver’s side, instructing DeHart to step out of the car. DeHart again refuses and Deputy Eggers opens the car door and attempts to pull DeHart out as he resists. After the suspect refused to comply to the Deputies, McCowan deployed his taser. The footage showed DeHart screaming and writhing in pain after he was hit multiple times with the taser. DeHart is seen slamming his door shut and releasing a barrage of gunfire towards both of the deputies. Body camera shows Deputy McCowan dropping to the ground. McCowan’s dash camera video shows Deputy Eggers getting shot and limping away toward a patrol car. DeHart then fires an additional shot before driving away as Deputy Eggers fires at the fleeing car. After the shooting, Deputy Eggers radioes that she and McCowan had been hit and flags down a vehicle. She calls for Deputy McCowan, but gets no response.

After radioing for assistance, she attempted to put a tourniquet on herself, with the footage showing blood on her leg. Moments later, a truck with a man and woman inside is seen pulling up beside Deputy Eggers and offering assistance. The man helped Deputy Eggers apply the tourniquet. The woman walked over to Deputy McCowan, then came back and said, “He’s not breathing.” Other officers arrive a short time later. Authorities later announced Deputy McCowan was killed in the shooting. The incident triggered a multi-day search for DeHart, including through wooded areas, as authorities warned the public of an armed and dangerous suspect. Deputy Eggers has since been released from the hospital. The suspect in the case, Kenneth DeHart, evaded police for nearly five days before he was captured at a home in Knoxville on Tuesday, the day before McCowan’s funeral. He was charged with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, and felon in possession of a weapon. Three people have been charged with helping DeHart: his brother, Marcus DeHart, his girlfriend, Carrie Matthews, and a third individual identified as Maurice Warren.

  1. All these amendments of yours… this is a double-edged sword. Who issues certificates stating that these people are mentally healthy? Why are there so many people there always on drugs and with weapons? I am sure that anyone who wanted a weapon there has long been quietly buying it bypassing it. Because amendments. Judging by the people, they don’t care at all, if he just started shooting at a policeman to kill, then what are these freaks doing to ordinary people? Who are all your weapons protecting from?? Only military, police and security forces should have weapons. At least combat. I live in Russia, and I can imagine if this were allowed here. Hell on earth.

  2. If it was 2 Man 0n this call this W0uld have truned 0ut different… W0man are n0t maked f0r this w0rk.. she had N0 reacti0n time till she was hit..And in the middle 0F the fight she walks away…

  3. He had the right to defend him self he tased him for nothing . You can’t pull people over for no reason n make up shit to get a charge . Now look at the cop 😂

  4. Rough not seeing lethal cover until hands were secured. Disobedience doesn't mean death, but the hands are everything.

  5. If you don’t smoke and don’t know anyone that messes with it there should be no problem with them searching the vehicle. So why put up that much of a fight? Take your misdemeanor/felony and move on.

  6. You have to be such a selfish coward to hurt two human beings that way then go and hide behind others implicating them in order to save your self from facing your actions. This is so sad and pointless.
