Millville, New Jersey — The state Attorney General’s Office released the footage of the moments before an officer fatally shot a city man holding what police have described as a machete outside a home earlier this month. Police were called to a house on Burns Street about 9:30 p.m. and encountered 33-year-old Daniel Ackley, who was holding the machete. According to the preliminary investigation, the shooting occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 4 outside a residence on Burns Road in Millville. Officers of the Millville Police Department responded to 911 calls reporting an emergency at the residence. After officers arrived, they encountered Mr. Ackley holding a machete outside the house. As Mr. Ackley advanced toward the officers with the machete, Officer Timothy Rehmann discharged his service weapon, fatally wounding Mr. Ackley. Officers and emergency medical personnel rendered first aid to Mr. Ackley, and he was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 10:56 p.m.

  1. The officer was so calm at first, even as the guy came at him with the machete. It was only when he realized the guy was determined to force him to shoot that you start to hear any stress in his voice as he said “I don’t want to shoot you.” Tragic.

  2. Our system is so f’d up. How many veterans have we seen on PA being killed by officers that were suicidal or having a mental breakdown? By no means is it the fault of the police officers, but it is the fault of our government. These men and women need help yet thousands are failed. May this man RIP, and I hope the officers are doing well. 🖤💙🇺🇸

  3. why cant cops just shoot there legs or foot why go from the stomach when you know it more risky for them to die WHYYY CANT YOU TRY AND TAZE THEM FIRST THEN USE YOUR WEPON FOR YOUR LAST RESORT!!!

  4. Could this officer shot the man in the arm with the knife? Was this preventable? I need some strangers to help me out with this one.

  5. The suspect seemed a bit aggressive. He needs to learn calming methods. Might I suggest 3 deep breathes, light yoga or tapping.

  6. If a black officer was the one to shoot the suspect he would have been facing murder charges 💯💯💯 we seen that many many times

  7. No Vet should be left to their own devices. They all deserve the best care all their lives. 💔

  8. Nice. A moment of clarity after he was shot: "Shit, that was stupid." Yes it was, yes it was. Suicide by cop is one of the most asshole moves a person can make. Can't do it yourself so you back someone else into a corner and force them to.

  9. "That was stupid". So…that wasn't the outcome he wanted. He definitely regretted it when it was too late. Gotta be a way to prevent that. Geez. Now, he'll just be a clip in an "Instant Regret" video. Sad.

  10. The start of this was a South Park reference. Yeah, that was pretty stupid. Perfect healthy dude, probably a father, is now dead and those who loved him will spend years mourning his suicide. Perhaps the cop could have shot his arm holding the weapon or even a leg to stop his approach. Nope, the color of your ass doesn't mean jack shit; you go towards cops with a weapon, you are probably going to die.
