Chicago, Illinois — On October 2, 2022, at about 5:00 a.m., a man flagged down an officer on patrol in the 400 block of West Blackhawk Street. The man said someone just pointed a gun at them. Shortly thereafter, officers identified the individual described (20-year-old Antonio Calmese Jr.) and began to pursue him on foot. After officers engaged Calmese, officer Jarron Jefferson, 34, deployed his taser twice, but did not appear to make contact with Calmese. Then, before turning a corner into another alley, Calmese fired what appeared to be one shot in the direction of the officer. Jefferson ran to the corner and fired what appeared to be seven rounds toward Calmese, then another four shots. He took cover behind the corner of a building and then fired another seven rounds at Calmese, who did not appear to fire back and dropped to the ground. Fire officials arrived to render aid about eight minutes after the shooting. A handgun and shell casings that didn’t match the officer’s weapon were recovered near Calmese. Calmese was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Jefferson, who wasn’t shot, was treated for injuries at the same hospital.

  1. Don’t pull out a taser without at very least one officer with lethal cover. Obviously it’s a stressful situation but a takeaway for me is training to get that second hand to marry up with the other while shooting for more accurate shot placement.

  2. What we don't experience is the smell of it all. The head shot was the end of him, but the smell of the gore stays in the mind.
    May Christ have mercy, Amen.

  3. unfortunately many mistakes were made by both parties, i'm glad the officer made it though. Hopefully this body camera footage can become good training!
(to the keyboard warriors going to attack me,
    1. shoulda been on the other side of the cars while he was following, so he could duck down if he had to since it was KNOWN the suspect had a firearm.
    2. where did his partner/driver go?! why didn't he loop around and flank using the vehicle?
    3. get both hands on your gun, and take controlled shots utilizing your weapon light
    4. if you don't have a weapon light get one
    5. officer almost gave the suspect a perfect ambush situation)

  4. Man.. That is one brave officer. Cops like him should have been present during the Uvalde school shooting. He would've stopped the threat immediately

  5. This cop needs to be fired or retrained. He put himself in so much unneeded danger in a multiude of different ways. The ONLY reason he's alive is because the guy he's chasing didn't want to kill him. Anyone with malicious intent and half a brain would've EASILY been able to jump this guy between the multiple turns, failed taser, shooting with 1 hand, and running with a flashlight on the other hand.

  6. This officer is a very genuinely good guy. He was going to let the guy go and take his gun from him almost like a super hero from a movie. You did everything right here brother more officers like you are needed out there and thank you for what you do for your community! God bless you Don't let it get to your brother you did the right thing
