Officers arrested a Lufkin teen early Tuesday morning following a three-county, 120-mph chase that began with a reckless driving report. Douglas Richard, 18, remained in the Angelina County Jail around 11 a.m. Tuesday, following his arrest which occurred just before 1 a.m. on FM 1277 in San Augustine County. His bond had not been set.

The incident began with a call to dispatch from a concerned citizen at 12:10 a.m. of a black Chevy Cobalt with a busted window “flying around a neighborhood” off Atkinson Drive. An officer caught up to the suspect vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop after seeing the driver fail to signal at a turn and then run the red light at Atkinson and Timberland Drives.

The driver, later identified as Richard, did not stop though the officer activated his overhead lights and siren and instead accelerated to more than 90 mph, outbound on Atkinson Drive. The chase began at 12:19 a.m. Richard continued onto state Highway 103 toward Etoile, reaching a top speed of 120 mph and swerving into the oncoming lane, as two other Lufkin officers joined the chase.

The pursuit continued for 27 miles through Angelina, Nacogdoches and San Augustine Counties. Richard brought the vehicle to a stop at 12:38 a.m. on FM 1277 in San Augustine County. The officers ordered him out of the car and placed him under arrest as two Sabine County deputies arrived to assist.

When asked why he ran, Richard told the officers, because “it was fun.” He went on to say that his registration was out and he did not have insurance. He said that because he did not want his vehicle towed, he decided he was going to run. Officers found a 15-inch decorative knife and unopened beer during a search of Richard’s car. Richard is charged with felony evading arrest and several misdemeanor traffic offenses including: expired license plates, fail to signal, no insurance, no driver’s license and running a red light.

  1. Was this video private? Wtf? I've watched every police activity vid and this one never showed up on channel, just randomly popped up in recommended. And of all things it's an absolutely bizare video. I think the cops were as surprised as I was he when he did as instructed.

  2. Black people! This is how to comply with police instructions. Since he didn't act a fool as y'all usually do, he is still alive.

  3. Black man, chased by police. Never got shot, hit, tackled, nothing. B/c he did what the cops told him to do. If 100% of people did this. The media wouldn't cover things about cops b/c nothing would happen. The street isn't a court room. a cop did you wrong take it to court. It will only be worse for you if you try to handle it in the street.

  4. I can hear the confusion. His voice sounds like "Am i dreaming? What should we do when someone actually do as i order?" And he took his time to think about life.
