The Ohio State Highway Patrol released dash-cam video of a trooper being hit by a car last Friday while he was making a traffic stop. Sergeant Jim Smith with the Chardon Post was talking to another driver on the side of the road when a car crashed into his cruiser and also hit him. Smith was released from the hospital on Monday, August 1. The at-fault driver was not injured, and the Patrol is still investigating. The Patrol said that this crash serves as a reminder for all drivers to move over when they see law enforcement stopped on the side of the road:

“All drivers should move over to an adjacent lane when approaching any vehicle with flashing or rotating lights parked on the roadside, according to Ohio law. If moving over is not possible due to traffic or weather conditions, or because a second lane does not exist, motorists should slow down and proceed with caution.”

  1. When I got pulled over by OSHP Devers, he approached on the passenger side and stuck his big head trough my window to sniff for alcohol and weed before issuing me a fraudulent ticket for speeding. I suppose that had I been female, he may have saundered up on the drivers side too. Odd to see that hat (which instills such authority) rolling on the ground like a useless bobble top.

  2. this is why its illegal to stop in the road. he has her car, as well as his still in the road. neither of their cars are past the white line. how are we supposed to pass if theres a double yellow? he made very unsafe calls just to ask her about the red light? hat did we learn here today?

  3. Drivers need to not be nosy when someone else is pulled over and just pay attention to driving. Kudos to the girl for hopping out her window to help the officer.

  4. Seriously that's why in the hand book it clearly states pull over in a safe place on the side of a road is not a safe place the cops need to learn we have rights as we get pulled over so I'm going to listen to a handbook not some dipshit half inbred officer who never got past preschool. If it was me in that car I would sue the county for forcing me to pull over instantly or risk being beaten because they claim your fleeing ppl need to realize their are no loopholes when it comes to human rights.

  5. Damn, it could have been a lot worse though, in glad the car hit the police car before hitting the officer.

  6. everyone says the driver is stupid and how does he not see. But in my state usually about 10 cops get hit on the side of the road a year. Last year was an especially bad one.

  7. You can hear him at the end of the video still saying "Get out of the car now!" with his back snapped in half lying on the ground in front of the cars blocking the view.
