  1. On November 27, 2017 at approximately 6:30 p.m., John Hotchkiss met with Ivan Figueroa-Serrano to purchase drugs. Hotchkiss’s friend, Ishmile Ramirez, accompanied Hotchkiss, and waited in the parking lot for him to return, hanging in his aunt’s 2014 Ford Mustang.

Approximately 20 minutes later, Ramirez approached the apartment to figure out why his friend hadn’t returned. Ramirez knocked on the front door and Figueroa-Serrano answered — with a gun in his hand. Figueroa-Serrano pointed the gun at Ramirez and ordered him to the ground, while Hotchkiss was being held in a chokehold by someone else, and the two were arguing about whether Hotchkiss had stolen something from the person choking him. Figueroa-Serrano told Ramirez "this is what happens when you hang out with him,” and then ordered Ramirez to restrain his friend’s wrists with duct tape.

As the argument became heated between Hotchkiss and his assailant, Figueroa-Serrano struck Ramirez in the head with the firearm, and subsequently forced Ramirez into the trunk of his aunt's vehicle. Hotchkiss was already lying in the trunk, and Ramirez got in the trunk behind him.

Both victims were then driven to another location, where the vehicle was set on fire. Ramirez and Hotchkiss found that the trunk could be opened, so they attempted to exit the vehicle.

On exiting, Ramirez saw Figueroa-Serrano standing approximately 10 yards behind the vehicle — and then heard approximately seven gunshots; Hotchkiss and Ramirez immediately returned to the trunk.

Shortly thereafter, Ramirez exited the trunk and found no one in the area. He attempted to remove his friend from the trunk, but was unable — Hotchkiss had been shot and was unresponsive. Ramirez then walked toward the highway in an attempt to obtain assistance. Responding deputies found the vehicle engulfed in flames and upon the fire extinguishing itself, found Hotchkiss’s remains in the trunk of the vehicle, along with nine .40 caliber casings near the vehicle. Hotchkiss had been shot twice.

Jose Luis Santiago de Jesus, Natalio Lugo Villegas, Alex Nelson Arroyo, and Ivan Enrique Figueroa Serrano were all charged in relation to the crime.

Jose Luis Santiago de Jesus was charged with principal to murder in the first degree, principal to kidnapping (x2), principal to attempted felony murder in the first degree, and principal to arson to an occupied structure. On September 2, 2022, de Jesus was adjudicated guilty, and sentenced to three life sentences, plus two sentences of thirty years each.

Villegas was charged with second degree murder, principal to kidnapping (x2), principal to attempted felony murder in the first degree, and principal to arson to an occupied structure. On April 11, 2022, Villegas was adjudicated guilty of second degree murder and principal to attempted felony murder in the first degree, and sentenced to two state prison terms of 25 years, 10 months, and 15 days. The other charges against Villegas were dropped.

Arroyo was charged with principal to murder in the first degree, principal to kidnapping (x2), principal to attempted felony murder in the first degree, and principal to arson to an occupied structure. On December 9, 2021, all charges against Arroyo were dismissed… because Arroyo had died, at the age of 49.

Figueroa-Serrano was charged with principal to murder in the first degree, principal to kidnapping (x2), principal to attempted felony murder in the first degree, and principal to arson to an occupied structure. Figueroa-Serrano was recently adjudicated guilty, and his sentencing is currently scheduled for October 31, 2022.

This is the hospital interview of Ishmile Ramirez.

  2. That cop seemed so cold… like he didn't believe him. He asked several times if he would press charges. if you're looking at somebody who is dead it wouldn't be up to the victim to press charges so his question didn't make sense unless he didn't believe him.

  3. I am very well aware of getting info from victims early do to remembering better at that time. Also I I know that being professional and thorough is of importance.. however that cop needs to work on his compassion skills. I mean dang.

  4. Poor guy is going to have nightmares about this terrifying event he experienced.
I hope he has recovered mentally as much as he can and physically.
Glad to hear 3 of the monsters were found guilty and in prison. And the fourth one died.
This poor guy had to tell his story over and over each trial.

  5. I hope Ishmile gets charged relating to the drug purchase. He drove the car, and then someone was murdered during a crime he had knowledge of?

  6. Man , I hear the people across the room more than the dude telling the story. And the cameras right next to his head . He should have told them people to keep it down back there I'm trying to get some important shit here ,S H U T U P 😤👀

  7. Aww man. Bless his heart. I hope he gets the mental help to heal that he needs. This is horrible and I am sure it was terrifying.

  8. Guy will never be the same. Hopefully this is a learning experience to stay away from drugs and shady people rather than a spiral of depression and/or PTSD with increased drug usage. A good time to turn around. A good story to share too, like something from Breaking Bad, maybe scare kids away from drugs in a DARE program if those still exist.

  9. Buying drugs on the street from a known scumbag…. what could possibly go wrong. I mean i feel bad this had to happen, but youre out on the street scoring drugs from these people you dont know. Not the best life choices.
