A Doña Ana County sheriff’s deputy escaped injury after a man whom he stopped for a traffic violation attempted to flee with the deputy inside the car, authorities said.
Deputy Abel Rodriguez made the traffic stop just before 11 p.m. Feb. 20 at the intersection of McCombs Street and Red Sun Drive in Chaparral.
The driver of a 1999 Cadillac, Roberto Garcia, 26, had a warrant out of Otero County, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office said.
Rodriguez asked Garcia to step out of the car, but Garcia refused. When the deputy tried to physically take Garcia out of the car, Garcia put the vehicle in drive and began to drive away with the deputy inside the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.
Dashcam video captured the moments when Garcia sped away.
Rodriguez told Garcia to stop the car and hit him on the head with a flashlight in an attempt to get him to stop, officials said.
After driving 500 feet from the original traffic stop, Garcia stopped the vehicle and was taken into custody.

Right to jail. Right away.
Chicago pd would have split his skull for that, guaranteed.
That was the dumbest thing you could have done man. Can I take the car home, please?
This video is totally underrated. lol
why cant you issue citations with the guy in the car? Why does he need to get out for that? Seems like a silly rule.
A couple citations is better than a kidnapping charge? That was a very stupid thing to do.
Lol
Damn I can't believe he stayed so calm.
Cop made a stupid decision IMO, not worth your life or limb
LMAO
Cops always come up with the best quotes.
Geez that was very dumb to do. Sounded like a young person driving.
