Morristown Police Respond to Private Jet Mishap – Everything Law and Order Blog

On January 4, 2020 a Beechcraft B200 King Air, registration N200HF, landed on a wet runway and hydroplaned, ultimately overrunning the runway into an area of grass and mud, resulting in the airplane’s nose gear collapsing.

The pilot reported that, during the descent for an instrument approach in instrument meteorological
conditions, he saw an area of patchy fog over the approach end of the runway and leveled off to avoid the fog. He landed the airplane with about 3,000 ft of the nearly 6,000-ft-long runway remaining and felt the airplane hydroplaning while using a combination of wheel braking and the beta range of the propellers. The airplane subsequently overran the end of the runway onto grass and mud, which resulted in the nose landing gear collapsing. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the forward fuselage.

The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

The National Transportation Safety Board determined the probable cause of this accident to be the airplane hydroplaning while landing on a wet runway, which degraded its braking capability and
resulted in a runway overrun onto grass and mud, and the nose landing gear collapsing. Contributing to the accident was the pilot’s improper decision to land the airplane until it was near the runway midpoint due to fog over the approach end of the runway.

  1. The cops are clueless. They need the tail number of the air craft and p.s. and btw, everything has an expiration date. I thought the pilot would show all his credentials.

  2. As info, if there are no injuries, the FAA generally arrives within 36 hours . . .
NTSB (who also does a report!) will be right behind them.

  3. I’m glad this was all that happened. We have a very deadly history with aircraft accidents.

  4. Give the cop a little bit of a break. It was his first time working an incident of this type. He honestly inquired of the fire chief what he needed to do and clearly stated "I want to do this right"

  5. It's pretty funny hearing a cop try and figure out how to deal with a pilot's license. Just a little bit out of his element.

  6. Pilot certificates never expire, just the medical certificate. I'm not sure that the police have any authority to get the pilot license or medical certificate. That is up to the FAA.

  7. To all the stupid people bitching that the cop didn't want to walk out to the plane, the plane isnt on fire, everyone is already off the plane since the fire department cleared it and they dont have anyone committing a clear crime so why would they walk out to the plane? The FAA specifically doesn't want anyone to go in or out of the plane and want nothing disturbed so they can do the investigation without having to deal with an extra set of footprints possibly destroying evidence because a cop want to get a cool guy photo of the plane crash

  8. I'm guessing he was going too fast on approach and either overshot the runway or just didn't do anything to reduce his speed for some reason.

  9. An aircraft is technically a motor vehicle so why didn't the officer ask the pilot "Have you had anything to drink today?".

  10. 03:25… I'm confused… A plain crashed and only the pilot was able to exit the aircraft? Cause that is what it sounded like… One adult with a bunch of teenagers is not being allowed to exit the plain after it crashed… I think common sense would dictate getting everyone off the plain… Did I miss something or did they not explain things very well?… How would the FAA feel if the plain exploded while they were trying to figure this out

  11. That was a fuuuuuun afternoon. IMC conditions, strong tailwinds. He never stood a chance. There had been several close calls at Morristown, Teterboro, and Newark that same day.

  12. Why didn't the cops do a breathalyzer on the pilot right there and then? I'd figure that should be mandatory no matter what vehicle that crashes, even if it's a train or a plane.

  13. A plane full of teenage girls? Trending now on instagram: girls taking selfies while screaming “omg I’m literally about to die”

  14. BTW THATS NOT A MUD TRAIL YOU SEE BEHIND THE TIRES THATS FROM WHEN THEY SH1t themselves shortly after landing . I would have done the same exact thing! 😂😂
