Washington Heights, New York — On Thursday, December 7, 2023, at approximately 2:09 a.m., a civilian witness called 911 and reported that there was a disabled vehicle with no license plates on the entrance ramp to the Henry Hudson Parkway, in the vicinity of West 177th Street and Haven Avenue. At approximately 2:38 a.m., a second 911 caller reported that there was a crashed stolen vehicle at the same location. The caller provided a description of a black BMW 328i which was occupied by a male and a female. The investigation later revealed that this call to 911 was placed by 19-year-old Alec Perez. 
Police Officer Hadzovic approached the vehicle on the driver’s side and Police Officer Battista on the passenger’s side. As the officers approached, Perez exited the driver’s side door armed with the BB air pistol in his right hand. Perez pointed the air pistol at Police Officer Hadzovic and depressed the trigger multiple times causing an audible popping sound from the CO2 canister. As a result, Officer Hadzovic discharged six shots from his service firearm, and Officer Battista discharged three shots from his service firearm at Perez. Perez was struck twice by the gunfire and fell to the ground. He was transported via ambulance to Harlem Hospital Center where he was treated for his injuries. For his actions, Perez was arrested and charged with Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree and Menacing in the Second Degree.
