Just before 10 pm on Tuesday September 17, 2019, a couple traveling from Michigan to Arizona were injured in a fire and subsequent explosion near the Las Cruces Pilot Travel Center.
The couple was taken to a hospital before being transported by air to the closest regional burn center in Lubbock, Texas.
Body camera footage shows two police officers arriving at the scene of a reported fire in the bed of a pickup truck. As one officer approaches the couple – who are standing near their truck – a large explosion knocks the couple to the ground, catching the woman’s clothing on fire.
The couple’s pickup was towing a trailer with three horses and three dogs inside. The animals were not injured. An Animal Control officer took custody of the three dogs while an inspector with the New Mexico Livestock Board found temporary shelter for the three horses. The fire that caused the propane explosion originated from a portable generator.
Regarding the guy being blurred beginning at a seemingly random point in the video: New Mexico’s access to public records statute is called the Inspection of Public Records Act –
“IPRA” for short. When a ‘public record’ is properly requested under the act and all fees are
paid, the only legitimate justification for withholding all or part of that record Is a specific statutory exemption. One of the exemptions under IPRA pertaining to medical care is found at NMSA § 14-2-1(A)(1), and it reads “(1)records pertaining to physical or mental examinations and medical treatment of persons confined to an institution.” Despite the fact that IPRA itself instructs that all of its exemptions are to be narrowly interpreted in favor of disclosure, the City of Las Cruces had take an an expansive reading of “records pertaining to physical examinations and medical treatment of persons confined to an institution” to include (a) most depictions of injury, and (b) literally any interactions between EMS and patients that is captured on video.
Finally, a note about something seen in this video: Around the five minute mark the woman is heard repeatedly stating that she can’t breathe. It’s easy to think nothing of that, as she is clearly breathing, but her experience (and far worse) is common in severe burn victims. Hot gases from the fire and explosion are inhaled, severely burning the airway and lungs. This alone can kill.
More-final-finally: This footage was captured on Axon Body 3 body-worn cameras. You won’t notice much if any difference, though, as their main selling point is the ability to livestream.

My husband would have been totally fixated on me. He would have disregarded his injuries and any animals getting to me and worrying about me. And I would have been doing exactly the same thing about him. The thing that really disturbed me the most about this whole video was that the husband barely expressed concern about his wife and maybe she already realized he wasn’t injured as badly as he was but neither expressed the level of concern for each other as they did for the animals. We love our animals too but not as much as each other.
That FTO really could learn some psychological traits from the rookie. The rookie showed lots of compassion and concern, while the older one just went by some inner protocol. I get the safety aspect, but he even stood like 2 meters from the owner and said that he didn't care if the horses died.
Got to love this officer caring about everybody the animals and everything what an awesome person

Personally, I was very impressed with the younger officer. He showed a cool head– yelling at the couple to Roll Roll Roll! Then patting out the fire that still burned on the man. His instincts are good. He also responded with compassion to the concern the couple had re: their animals. Also loved that the firefighters were keeping all 3 dogs in their truck. Not to mention the trucker who offered a blanket. As divided and often hateful as we, as a country, are right now, it does my heart good to see that there still are people who actually care.

That’s one of my nightmares is to be traveling and be in some horrific accident while with my animals. It would be terrible to be in a strange place and not have friends and family around when you’re injured and in the hospital. I travel all over the US with my Great Danes going to dog shows, so the possibility of it happening is real. Just like these people, my first concern would be my animals. I understand where the one cop is coming from that it’s the people that are their concern, not the animals, but you wouldn’t be able to calm me down and get me to do what you want unless I knew my animals were being attended to also.
I find most of those cops' callous and dismissive attitude in regards to the animals appalling and infuriating. If my dogs or horses were in mortal danger and you displayed that attitude, it would earn you a concussion. If you threatened my dogs or horses, it would earn you a bullet. Four legs or two, they are family. And frankly, some of them display far more humanity than many of today's alleged "humans" do.

That Lady is an absolute BEAST. Her skin is literally hanging off her arms in pieces and chunks and she keeps saying for them to go check the horses. I'm sure the adrenaline was going huge through her tho cuz as time went on and as more and more people showed up you can tell she started to feel the pain more and more also.
The horses and animals were okay for anyone wondering.

It disturbed me when the officer said, as a collective, they didnt care if the horses and dogs die 8:43. Quote: “their lives arent our priority†but the officer was holding back the owner trying to potentially save their animals, that means there is nothing to save their life leaving luck their only hope. Another or even the initial explosion could have killed them or even burned them alive. This was truly disappointing to watch them neglect the fact that they are living beings with feelings. The two people were clearly alive and well enough to check on them, also mentally willed to. It brings me back to the story that some firefighters held back a man trying to get into his half burning house to get his burning dog. Truly disturbing and disappointing. This shit is adding to the things that make me not able to sleep at night.

Were the two patients blurred out due to HIPAA considerations? Once the firefighters/paramedics made contact, the couple officially became patients, and as such fall under HIPAA regulations. Just a thought.
