The mission of Seattle’s Office of Police Accountability (OPA) is to “ensure that the actions of Seattle Police Department employees comply with law and policy by conducting thorough, objective, and timely investigations, recommending improvements to policies and training, and engaging in collaborative initiatives that promote systemic advancements.”

The audio recordings contained in this video pertain to a complaint that was made about an SPD lieutenant. The complaint was ultimately sustained, and the lieutenant was suspended for five days.

The complaint alleged that the lieutenant made unprofessional and biased comments regarding the Holocaust, Germans, and Jewish people. The comments were made on two separate occasions and were heard by employees of the Southwest Precinct. When information emerged during an interview that another employee failed to report the lieutenant’s comments to OPA as required by SPD policy, a complaint was opened on that issue as well.

The final case summary for 2017OPA-1202 can be found at http://tiny.cc/findings.

  1. The fallout of this type of complaining could create a chilling effect on speech at the station. Don't say a word or you might get in trouble, don't listen to anyone or you might get in trouble. Just a bunch of strangers trying to work a tough job and nobody knows what other cops are doing because it's too risky to talk.
They'll never work well as a team and nobody will want to assist another cop that's in danger if they are all trying to avoid each other.
Too bad they couldn't shit can the little cry baby. He needs to wipe away his tears and learn the rhyme "sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me."

  2. This whole thing is ridiculous. Yeah he made a stupid offensive joke he shouldnt have. Why are they being driven in a van to some stupid holocaust sensitivity training anyways. I don't think there's been a lot of instances of police going out and harrasing holocaust victims. Everyone makes off color remarks why can't the Jews take a joke.

  3. Sounds to me one little winey snowflake got his er her wittle feelings hurt and squield and now has several other probably upstanding officers jobs and reputations in jeopardy for a joke that was harmless and goofy and harmed nobody ! Fucking little sniveling crybaby snowflakes need to get different jobs because in this line of work allot more is going to be said that might oooooofend there little feelwings!

  4. There should be a bias investigation into why the opa investigator was making jokes with the female officer during this investigation @51:00. How sexist to not joke around with the male officers. She should be fired immediately since we now investigate joking around.

  5. SEATTLE HAS GONE TOTALLY BONKERS, it used to be a good place to live 20plus years ago. I cannot believe these idiots wasting our HARD EARNED tax money on this crap. Absolutely preposterous. Te investigators need to be investgated and in my opinion fired for abusing department resources.

  6. This sounds less like a racist comment and more and more like a group of people who do not work and play well together. In Kindergarten they make the offending parties sit in a circle and say everything out loud and then say they are sorry. I wonder….

  7. I'm really bothered that this is over an hour long, but the video of the cassette playing shows there's no way there's an hour of tape left to play.

  8. Sergeant, did you hear the Lieutenant make a joke?

    Yes.

What did you do about it?

Nothing. I was busy trying to get our police work done, and nobody complained. If anyone had complained, I would have told the Captain.

    YOU'RE UNDER ARREST!!!!!

  9. I'm glad OPA is taking this kind of thing seriously because that is how you figure out which officers would cause bigger problems. If he makes comments and jokes like this, he might be unprofessional in enforcing the law.

  10. I so appreciate that you give such a great description of what the video entails.. Helps me choose when to plan to watch it and whether I need headphones 😂 love the channel SO much!! Thank you for your work and efforts!

  11. The 1st amendment protects your right to say (almost) anything you want…. it does NOT protect you from criticism, ridicule or societal pepercussions resultant from the fool things you say.

  12. What? The old Auschwitz guard tower joke results in an official investigation with penalty of being fired? If the OPA is wasting its time on shit like this, things must be going pretty good.
