The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 11, 2024. when Las Cruses Police Officer Jonah Hernandez, was responding to a trespassing call by the owner of the property on the 300 block of south Valley Drive.

There has been a history of trespassing, vandalism, starting fires, erratic behavior and people leaving needles on that property. The suspect was confronted by the property owner the day before and asked or told to leave.

The investigation has revealed that, when officer Hernandez arrived at the scene, the suspect, Armando Silva, 29, immediately attacked him with a large kitchen knife. After stabbing officer Hernandez, Silva, a man with a history of crimes and mental ilness, tried attacking a bystander who witnessed the unprovoked attack on Hernandez. That witness retrieved his own firearm, shot and killed Silva.

Another witness then utilized Hernandez’s radio to call for help.

Officer Hernandez was transported to MountainView Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Hernandez served as a Las Cruces Police Department officer since June 2022.

Officer Jonah Hernandez is survived by his wife, Yesenia Lopez, and two sons: Sebastian Jonah, 10, and 2-year-old Joaquin Leonel. Hernandez was from El Monte, California., and grew up in El Paso, Texas. He was a 2006 graduate of Americas High School.

The mother of Armando Silva, Xochitl Hernandez also made a statement.
As a mother and a citizen of the Las Cruces Community, I am very torn and troubled over the recent tragic events that lead to the loss of two beautiful human lives. I would like to clarify that my son was not a “homeless vagrant” as he is being portrayed. He was a young man, that has suffered from severe mental illness for many years now. For those of us who knew him, this very tragic event, was out of character for him. I cannot sit here and try to defend his actions, I know he committed a crime and took a life, as a result his was taken too. We will never really know or understand what was going
through his mind at the time. We can discuss and argue over the WHY and point blame, but that gets nowhere.
I don’t know what is worse, knowing that your child killed someone, or hearing that your son is deceased and no longer in this life with you.
My heart goes out to the fallen officer that was killed in the line of duty. I feel so much sorrow for his family and loved ones, for the community, and for his life that has ended.
My thoughts and prayers to the civilian that intervened and assisted as we hope anyone of us would do for each other in our community. It was a very difficult decision and I worry about their emotional and mental state at this time due to the traumatic event of having to make that choice.
There is a mental health crisis in our community. The issue needs to be addressed. For the safety of lives, as well as the sake and future of our community. We hope and pray that our community keeps this unity and fights for change. Unfortunately, we cannot
change what has already happened, but hopefully we can heal together as a community,
by joining together and advocating for change.
The officer should not have fallen in the line of duty like this, my son should not have lost
his life this way. My prayers, thoughts, and love to everyone involved in this tragedy.

  2. I was very shocked by what happened to this police officer..RIP to the family I can only say my condolences and may my father give you the strength to overcome this

  3. Can you tell that this is a DEMOCRAT RUN CITY when they tried to charge a CIVLIAN who stopped a CRIMINAL who MURDERED a police officer with a crime.

  4. As a father I feel so bad for his kids. So unfair for him to be taken from them. People like this do not deserve to be in society with everyone else. He had a past history of violence and mental health issues. He should have been in prison or a mental health institution. This country shut down most of its mental health institutions in the 1980s-1990s. They clearly need to bring them back.

  5. i should have listened to everybody that told me not to watch this. i’m in tears. i hope his family never ever sees this video. oh, jonah. my heart is broken for you and your loved ones. i don’t even know how to put how i feel into words. i’m so so sorry. i’m so sorry. this is just…this is devastating. rest well, jonah, we will not forget you.

  6. This is hard to watch. We lost a loved one in the line of duty by getting shot and watching this brought it all back. The last part of this video sent me. The EOW signing out was hard to listen. May he rest in peace im so sorry this world is horrible

  7. As sad as this is, which made me cry in the end. How many more ex cops have killed themselves and no talks about it as it should be spoken about it.

  8. The statement from the good Samaritan kicked me right in the gut. Thank you for being there for this officer. You did your very best to protect everybody. All my best to the officer's family, friends, and the other Good Samaritan as well. Godspeed.

  9. This is the worst video I’ve ever seen on YouTube. The quick transition, the carotid spray, the gurgling, the fact the officer had a wife and kid, the fact two innocent civilians had to watch a police officer die after one of them killed the threat, the fact the officer showed respect and was alone and the fact he only had two years on the job.

Everything about it makes me angry and sad.

Condolences to everyone forever affected… including us third party viewers.
