Every year, American police officers kill around 1000 people. 20 times more per head of population than in France and 60 times more than in the UK. Today more than ever, the American police force is feared by those it is supposed to protect.

Films of police shootings, whether from people’s phones or bodycams, have caused outrage. A driver was hit in the back by several bullets just for a broken brake light. Another was killed in front of his girlfriend during a routine roadside check. There was even a yoga teacher who was shot by the policeman she had called for help… These are just a few of the tragedies that have shocked America.

Since the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, anti-police sentiment across America has grown. The police position has hardened, as they employ more and more drastic techniques – riot gear, assault rifles, armored vehicles.

This over-militarization is no accident. For years, US police stations have been accumulating military equipment from the « 1033 program », created by the Pentagon to transfer excess military equipment to civil law enforcement agencies.

From California to Florida, passing through Missouri, we have studied this police force which is, more than ever, under fire.

This documentary was produced by Les Films de L’Odyssée and directed by Sebastien Gilles. It was first released in 2018.

30 thoughts on “American Cops: Protectors or Killers? Police Shootings in the USA | Witness | Crime Documentary”
  1. The most worrying thing here is the American Police's obsession with their own safety.

If you're so concerned about your safety, don't join the Police. It's not rocket science.

  2. It doesn’t matter how much equipment they have.
They are outnumbered—80 to 1 on our worst day and they can’t be everywhere
They are outgunned—400 million + firearms in private hands in USA
They are outmanned—there ain’t a man among ‘‘em that doesn’t use tampons or have lace on their panties on a regular basis

  3. So guilty until proven innocent! We didn’t find any drugs guns or money but he MIGHT be dangerous and we’re gonna arrest him for a 24 hour hold so “the detectives can talk to him about the case”

  4. Would the narrator of this video be willing to approach the front door of a known violent felon, just to politely knock and say ‘hello, I’m here to arrest you.’ I suspect not.

  5. I don’t live in the USA( luckily) but lookin at the police videos on here, you Americans have a real problem……. But then again ,you created it yourselfs

  6. Obama complains about the militarization of the police force but yet it is the federal government’s doing of suppling the police forces with this equipment.

  7. Here are 10 shocking statistics on black on black crime in Chicago:

In 2022, there were 500 reported cases of black on black crime in Chicago.
Out of those cases, 70% involved firearms.
The average age of the perpetrators was 25 years old.
80% of the victims were also black.
There were 100 reported cases of black on black homicides in 2022.
Drug-related crimes accounted for 30% of the black on black crime cases.
Only 20% of the cases resulted in arrests.
The majority of the crimes occurred in low-income neighborhoods.
There were 200 reported cases of black on black robberies in 2022.
Gang-related activities were involved in 40% of the black on black crime cases.

  8. Duhhh dumb ass the reason why they have that is because criminals don't follow laws and kill people. Imagine if the cops only use handguns vs the criminals have an AR who's gonna win that firefight obviously the criminals so by the police having an AR rifle they can win the fight. Also that guy is a criminal how do you know he won't kill you

  9. Well, its a homemade problem. If the US wouldnt allow all these weapons in the first place, the cops also wouldnt have to be so heavily armed and ready to shoot all the time. There are countless countries in europe, where these things almost never happen (ppl getting killed by cops, or the other way around), simply cause guns are strictly forbidden and really hard to get and people dont grow up with this culture around guns. So yea, i understand this one cop talking about its such an evil world, but please portray this thinking on your world in the US. You made it that way. I doesnt have to be that way. Also the murder rate in the US is just nuts. In germany for example, you maybe have 100 homicides the WHOLE year. In citys like Chicago alone, the numbers go over 800 and for the state over a 1000 a year. This one place alone. Its just unbelieveable.

  10. All that weaponry for usually 1-2 criminal men that might be armed with maybe a pistol i get it community needs protection but that is a bit of overkill you're policeman not soldiers.

  11. Protectors, of course. Don't think so? See what happened in cities that defunded the police. If people didn't take an attitude with police, they wouldn't get in trouble.

  12. Being a Police Officer is similar to being in a war; many officers have to take medication to deal with the trauma. There are some bad officers, just like people in any other field.

  13. I was assaulted then changed for assult tresspassed when they were tresspassing crimnial damage when they broke a 1898 lamp put in rehab for passing my drug test ycso mayer az

  14. The military truck police is stupid, the only way that thing would be usefull would be against a full favela here in south américa or a full drug clan, wth
