Desperate overcrowding, rats, disease – welcome to Antanimora Prison in Madagascar. A prison in the middle of the capital Antananarivo and bursting at the seams. Originally built for 800 prisoners, the complex houses more than 3,000 prisoners. They sleep crammed together, body against body, some on the bare floor. In the cells: darkness, cockroaches, lice and the unbearable odor of latrines.
One meal per day consisting of a bowl of cassava [maniok]. No meat, no fruit – everything a tasteless mush. Malnutrition is said to be one of the main causes of death in Antanimora. Only those who have the support of friends and relatives have a chance to get better food and other amenities such as water for washing and showering or enough small change to secure a bunk bed. If a prisoner breaks the rules, he ends up in the dreaded hellhole – a single cell full of excrement, in which the occupant vegetates: lonely, half-naked, and without a toilet.
Dabakoto knows the hellhole all too well: he has spent a total of 30 days in solitary confinement. 75-year-old Samuel is serving a 38 year sentence and will not leave Antanimora Prison alive. Prison life in Madagascar’s toughest jail leaves its cruel mark on everyone. Women and children must exist in the same miserable conditions as the men. Pregnant women or mothers with newborns receive no special treatment. The 28-year-old Noelisoah has been taking care of her baby since its birth, behind bars.
The worst thing about this horror prison in Madagascar is the rat infestation, rampant throughout the entire prison. The fleas transmit the deadly plague. Should the plague erupt inside the prison, it would only be a matter of time before it spreads to the outside, the capital.
